They DON'T suck, that's the main problem. They don't circulate the air enough to effectively get rid of dust and other particles.

It works by negativley charging the air and airborn particles. Since the Ionic breeze spreads negative ions faster than it is able move air to clean it through its filter, most of it ends up on positivly charged objects, such as your carpet, furniture, walls, etc.

I cleaned a house that had one of these and had candles burning at the same time. This nasty mix of oil and smoke covered EVERYTHING. I totally agree with mkygod about what happens. It's totally a marketing thing, much like Bose.

There was an article in the texas exes alcalde magazine about an engineering student conducting a test on these things. Conclusion was that these things did absolutely nothing but just add ozone to your home. They said a regular hepa filter worked 10 times better then these things.

http://www.engr.utexas.edu/news/action_shots/pages/Dr.%20Siegel.cfm

heres the website I found on the student who conducted the test which was partly supported through the international society of exposure analysis with funding from the american chemistry council.

Bottom line, its probably bad for your health....

..don't waste your money. They're Gadget Store Junk. I had one for awhile and it became so fouled with dust it would arc like a Jacobs Ladder. It collects dust in areas that can't be cleaned. And the CU test says it doesn't work to begin with.

They do something, if you see the amount of dust and dirt I clean off the grids ever week. My Condo well keep.

The fact is... for something that is silent, low-energy consuming, it does SOMETHING. The amount of Ozone that the product emits is for the most part negligible unless you have an abundance of existing respitory problems. True, a regular hepa filter will clean the air 10 times better than an ionic breeze, but you sacrifice noise, electricity and regular filtration changes... and it'll still cost you more than $100. Now for $350, I'd say you're an idiot if you buy an Ionic Breeze, but for under $100, its not that bad and may be worth a shot to see if it works for you.

..you'er still left with the fact that CU says it's worthless as a air cleaner and will become an arc hazzard over time.

I agree.

We don't need to start one of these discussions for the one billionth time. Everyone has heard everything before.

Some people like them (including myself), and some people don't. Let's just leave it at that.

Edit: In addition, they have the ozone removal faces now, just as a side note.

If anything, you can resell these on ebay. They seem to have ending bids averaging $120 + shipping.

My wife bought one from Sharper Image a couple of years ago for about $300. It does collect alot of crap on it and it is easy to clean. It does do something but I don't know how much.

I do know that the hepa filters I have in each of my kid's rooms cost about $60 to replace the filter. That's what was so attractive about the ionic breeze. No buying expensive filters.

I bought a small one for my bathroom. I could tell that it was removing particles from the air because I had to clean black gunk off the grid every few weeks. The downside was since it was the bathroom model, it pluged into the wall and caused the wall to turn black around it as well.

So while it does work, I would much rather use a hepa filter, though the filter costs might be higher.

Let's all ignore almost every consumer group on the face of the planet and waste 99 dollars on one! Sounds like fun!!!

It's worth $99 as an air freshener. I like the way these make the air smell. I don't think it collects any significant amount of dust but it's cheaper than buying plugin refills every month.

btw if you have Discover card points to redeem you can get a double reward at Sharper Image and those cards work on these. So you could get these for $50 worth of Discover points.

I have an imitation model and I really don't like the smell it puts out. It does collect dust but so does everything else in my apartment.

There is one reason I still use it though: My apartment during the winter has really, really bad problems with static electricity. I can walk to my door, touch the knob, get a zap, walk five feet and come back for another zap. When I have this thing turned on, the static electricity levels drop considerably. The other day I went to turn off a light and I literally got zapped so hard it hurt for about 5 minutes.

Yeah I know it's a moisture thing but just turning this on low is a lot easier than refilling my humidifier every day (which sucks anyway and I need to replace with a better one).

This thing is really useless.
I own one and still have. Right now it is collecting dust in the storage, doing better than when it was plug in.

I have asthma and since this is my health, spending $250+ at that time does not seems so bad.
After a couple of months, this thing start to make crackling noise, no matter how much I clean the wire or the dust gathering bar.
I go to the store and got a no question ask exchange for a brand new in box not refurb..
Same problems and it got worst, i can see little electric charge on the contact wire now.

When CR reports came out, I decided to get a Honeywell Quietcare air filter.
This thing rocks, it can traps 90% more dust than the ionc breeze can.
Btw, I found out the the real cost is overinflated by SI.
Prefilter on my honeywell is really cheap, $10 gets you 4-5 filter.
You can make it last longer by vacuuming the prefilter instead of replacing it.
The main filter is $40 (more or less depends on size).
Mine is pretty quiet on low (when I sleep).

Not to tc OP's post but I thought ppl should know before plunking down $100 for a useless stuff.
But each to his/her own, read ppl's opinion and draw your own conclusion.

There is a recent study done by the University of Texas that states that the ionic filtration system does not work.

So this is not hot IMO.

Well I dont know what else to say other then I have the walmart knock off that is going for $149. I can say it works and works well but it is in my bedroom (12x13 space) and in a few weeks the grids are very dirty. If left off for 2 days the room does end up having an odor to it but once it gets cleaned and back on the room smell goes away. With it on my room smells great and I see that it works because there is always sh!t stuck to the grids everytime we pull it out so it is doing something
Just dont expect to get one a clean a huge room. One is in my sons rooms as well and all of them the rooms smell clean when it is on and an odor when off and ALL of them have black dust soot like crap stuck to the grids.
I am more then happy with mine.

This is the ones we have and it really does make the room smell great and can feel something like are going past the front of it when you place your hand near it.

$130 with free ship at amazon for the one we got.
