Today I saw a decent refurbished Asus A7V333 mobo newegg for $39.99. I am considering buying it, but i'm not sure because of the quality. Does anyone really know how reliable a refurbished motherboard would be? Has anyone had an experience with a refurbished product from newegg failing? Thanks for your input.

I ordered a Gigabyte GA-8SQ800 from them and it works fine. Didn't come with manuals or anything, but who needs em!?

As with any refurb from NewEgg, YMMV.

I just rma'd a Shuttle AK39N motherboard (shipped it out today) because it was DEAD. No joy in any way.

Remember that unless you choose replacement (which will only happen with a refurb if they happen to have another one available), you'll be charged a 15% restocking fee, and your original shipping cose (if any) will not be refunded.

It's too bad that board was dead, since it had all the accessories in with it. Guess I'll have to spend the additional $40 to get a new one.

I got an account just to post this.
You've got to be very careful when buying a refurb motherboard.
The mobo I bought from Newegg was an repaired old version which had heating problems(I learnt this later). It worked fine until a few weeks after the end of the warranty. I had installed all needed cooling. I guess the refurbishers just made a quick fix.
So cross check the version of the board with the manufacturer, and make sure it's the latest revision.

I bought a refurbed A7V333 from Newegg a few months ago, looked new, works fine (currently running an XP1700 @ 2.5GHz even though it's an earlier revision that doesn't officially support >= 166MHz FSB). After a very carefull inspection it didn't look to be repaired in any way, was brand new or at least very well cleaned. It didn't come with the rear I/O plate (which is unique, proprietary) and fabricating one was a bit of a PITA. Neither did it have any other cables like firewire or game port, USB, but that leads up to my next point as others have already mentioned...

Their refurbs are a huge YMMV situation... just because the one I received works fine doesn't necessarily mean the "next" one will... might be repaired and/or come with the cables, or not. At this point an A7V333 board for $40 isn't too good a deal unless it's the version with the extra toys on it like firewire, RAID. At least it does support the Asus I-Panel, which is now priced a lot better, probably due to no support for it on Asus' nForce boards, so don't plan on reusing it with a later Asus board.

I've purchased two from them. Both worked great, both came with everything a new board would.

About 2 months ago I purchased the ASUS A7N8X DeLuxe (refurbished) from NewEgg.
Lovin' it right now.

It was just a motherboard. No manuals, no cables, no I/O backplate. At least it was in an anti-static bag though.

Certainly a YMMV, this will all depend on your PC building experience and the quaility you get with a refurb.

I'm tickled pink over my refurb.

I have bought many refurb boards from newegg and have been very happy EVERY time I do it. I just bought a Shuttle AK35GTR and it came with everything. Manuals (board & raid), sounds addon card and driver cd. No backplate. Currently oc'ing a XP 1600 to 1900 and running great

Yes ... be careful .... but for a test machine or a "play" machine .... its a smart buy

Asus refurbs often come as just the bare board from what I've read in many forum posts.

About 1 in 5 pieces are bad in my experience. "Refurb" processors all worked, but some were poor overclockers. One of three video cards was bad. Bad power supply. Good ECS mobo, but quirky. Copper refurb HS had noisy fan.

I have bought 4 refurb boards from them, 3 came with everything. I purchased these baords over the last 6 months. Three of them are MSI KT3Ultra2 Boards of which two came in boxes with everything and the other just the motherboard but all are still working fine. Also have a MSI K7N2G which came with everything in orig box for $59 and works great...I did noticed that the duff before me broke off a pin on the firewire port so thats prob why he RMA'd it...so I don't have or use firewire so doesnt bother me. I have purchased all kinds of refurb other stuff as well and had a few things not work as well but I know the risks involved with Refurbs and I am willing to take that risk with Newegg, but I have never bought refurbs from any other company.

Bought an A7V333 Raid from Newegg about 2 weeks ago at $39, works fine, no cables or I/O plate(dremeled out the corner of a standard I/O plate looks pretty good). So far I have bought 5 refurb Asus boards from Newegg in the last 6 months, another A7V333, and (3) A7N266-VM's, all bare boards, all worked fine.

p.s. If you get one make sure to test it right away as you have 14 days to return and if you get a bad one yes you will have to pay shipping back but I don't believe they will charge a restock fee like someone mentioned.

I bought an MSI KT3-ULTRA ARU form newegg awhile back. As some others have stated, it came with none of the extras, and was packed rather poorly -- motherboard, in static bag, rattling around in a USPS priority mail box.

I've bought two refurb boards from Newegg. One works well to this day, while the second had a leaking capacitor and broken heatsink tab on the socket.

YMMV in a big way...good luck.

EDIT: Most of these boards should still be under the manufacturers warranty, so you could RMA them for a new one.

I purchased a refurb Asus A7V8X from NewEgg. Works perfectly but didn't come with I/O Shield, manual or drivers. Good news is, I emailed rma@asus.com and requested the I/O shield. They sent it out next day, no charge. When I received it, it was for the A7N8X so I emailed again and they immedaitely sent the right one. Very nice!

When you order a newegg refurbished item, and it's DOA or not working 100%, you can do a exchange for the same exact item, or refund for 15% restocking fee. For exchange, If there are none left, they will credit you what you paid minus your shipping and handling (pretty much a refund with no restockin fee). Depending on why you are returning the item they might refund you shipping too. Example your Msi board came DOA because it looks like someone took a bite off the bottom left cornner, yes it look just like that.

I order a couple of newegg refurbished item and both motherboards, one came DOA and the other super unstable. The cases and little stuff all came good.

I don't recommend getting refurbished motherboards.

Bytheway, most if not all newegg refurbish motherboards are returns from customers.

About a week ago I ordered an Abit NF7-S refurb. It came with cables, manual, all the accessories and a retail box, but it was a version 1.0. After that version there was a ver 1.2 and now the ver 2.0 is out. So it is an older board. It is in very good shape but had a little dust on it and on fan blades so it was definitely used. Probably will crank it up Mon or Tues, will let you know how it comes out.

Refurb Abit NF7-S v. 1.0 here as well. Came with everything included,
works just fine for about a month already. Curiously, it came in a box with 2.0 sticker on it.
Got me all smiling but no, it was 1.0 inside, grrrr .

BTW thats my upgrade from refurb Epox 8K7A bought from newegg 2 years ago.
Works perfectly to this day.
