Regarding Canon EF 50mm f1.8 Metal Mount

Found a deal for one that includes a "rare" hood for $145. Is that a good deal, or should I just get the $80 plastic one? I figure the metal one would sell better later on if anything. Hurry, I hope to pick it up today!

I was considering the metal mount for 140. Plastics can be found for like 60.

I ended up getting the 50mm 1.4 for 250 instead.

I've seen them go as low as 120 bucks. Why not pick up a 1.4 for around 250 like Kelvirck and benefit with a bit more buttery bokeh.

It comes with the rare lens hood too...so that sweetens the deal. Yeah, I'm not going to jump another 100 for the lens. Haha. If anything, if I feel my photos are lacking then I'll upgrade, but I just wanted a decent low light lens to start with.

Whats so special about this lens hood?

You can usually find a 50 1.4 with a lens hood on fredmiranda. Thats how I got mine.

EDIT: Go with a cheap 50 1.8 or the 1.4 The metal 50 is a waste of money in my opinion. You wanted a cheap low light lens, why pay more for something that doesn't affect optics.

Go for the 1.4 - your low light shots will love you. As for the hood - I almost never use mine because that lens is my low light baby, and low light work usually needs no hood.

i bought the metal mount way back when... thinking it'd hold up and whatnot better.. but eventually sold it because i didn't use it much. i went back to 50mm to play with and bought the plastic nifty fifty... works just fine, and the lack of a distance scale doesn't bother me. Plus, like everyone else, I'll put the money I save towards a 50 f/1.4 Or a 10-20.... heh

If you are not going to get the 1.4 then get the plastic f/1.8. You won't lose much on resale because they are not that expensive to begin with.
