? regarding thumb drive......

I have friend who's computer is several years old and is operating windows 98. I believe it is the first edition not SE. The computer does not recognize a thumb drive as a removable drive when it is inserted in the USB port. They want to download documents to it to transfer them to another computer. I believe the documents in total would be too large to fit on a floppy. Will W98 recognize a thumb drive or is my friend SOL? They don't have a CD burner either. Very old machine.....thanks for your input.

USB keys got huge around the year 2000
Maybe try windows update, sometimes that adds features but Ithink he's SOL

Not unless you can install drivers from eather the internet or a CD. If you can't do eather of those then simply borrow a drive from another computer

Yeah you need to install the drivers for it, then it will work fine on 98.

Is this a windows driver or third party driver like a USB port type driver disc as you would get if you installed a CF card reader? The friend has a CD drive but not a RW one. I have a driver disc that I used to install a cf card reader on my machine.

I used to use win 98 with my flash drive. All you need is download a driver from the internet and I think it will recognize all flash drives as portable HDDs

The company that made the drive should have the drivers on the internet.

Hi, Neither 98 or 98SE will detect the drive. They don't have the drivers for it. Most manufacturers have 98 drivers on their site. If you can't find it there try driverguide.com. Luck, Jim

Thanks again. The drive is a sandisk 256 mini cruizer. Found the driver @ their website but it's only for 98SE. Checking on the OS to see if it's v. 1 or 2.

like everyone else said, download the driver for your usb flash drive from the manufacture.

I'm not even sure an add in card will help you with this as it will need drivers also for win98FE.

Some where you may have a chance of finding win98fe USB mass storage drivers is at the forum link at http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html if you want to sift thru the posts. Be aware that the rollup on the first page is for win98se only.

To find out what version he has, right click on My Computer and select "properties". Win98FE should say win 98 4.10.1998 and win98SE should say win98 second edition 4.10.2222. If you find that he has win98se, apply the rollup (as I did) and retry the san disk driver if necessary.

USB support was put in with Windows 95B IIRC, 98 was better, and 98SE was
mo' better.
