It worked for the "Gore said he invented the internet" lie. Actually, Bush's attributed quote is merely unsubstantiated, while Gore's is flat out false. And Gore didn't have any documented evidence of being an IT expert, while Bush had about 8 years of wiping his ass with the constitution, so there's that too.

Several provisions of the act, passed in the shell shocked period immediately following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, caused enough anger that liberal groups like the American Civil Liberties Union had joined forces with prominent conservatives like Phyllis Schlafly and Bob Barr to oppose renewal.

GOP leaders told Bush that his hardcore push to renew the more onerous provisions of the act could further alienate conservatives still mad at the President from his botched attempt to nominate White House Counsel Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court.

?I don?t give a goddamn,? Bush retorted. ?I?m the President and the Commander-in-Chief. Do it my way.?

?Mr. President,? one aide in the meeting said. ?There is a valid case
that the provisions in this law undermine the Constitution.?

?Stop throwing the Constitution in my face,? Bush screamed back. ?It?s just a god-damned piece of paper!?

My reading of this report, courtesy of factcheck.org, is that this story was reported by exactly one reporter who had a history of inaccuracies on similar issues, and the report was based on three anonymous sources. I'd say we can't say for sure it did or did not happen; factcheck felt it was highly unlikely, I have no reason to disagree with them.

Bush did enough to undermine the constitution in more important ways.

Davey - how about getting a clue? I am in no way, shape, or form saying that Bush did or did not say 'it' about the constitution, and I could care less.

I found it quite humorous and ironic, though, that someone like GenX is now accusing the left of using tactics previously only used by the right wing smear machines - you know, saying person X said something, when, taken in context, or as a response to a certain question, it makes perfect sense.
