What is really needed is good package management on Windows and Windows developers not to be idiots. The former is happening but probably won't be released for a while and the latter won't change as long as Windows is the lowest common denominator.

However, I can't remember having any issues with uninstalled apps on Windows in a very long time. The last time I probably used an uninstaller was 10 years ago.

Not all developers are Microsoft Certified. It should read, "As long as anyone with a keyboard and a copy of C++ can sell software online, the latter won't change."

And I just fixed a computer with issues like this a few weeks ago. Some 'coders' need to be shot. Oh, two months ago I had a girl who deleted a program instead of uninstalling it; Registry Mechanic fixed most of the bs errors she caused.

Like I said, repair tool, not performance tweak tool. Yes you can gain performance in a few areas (namely Internet Explorer browsing), but for gaming, video editing, 3D Modeling, or anything hardcore? Not really anything worth bothering for.

True and a huge problem is that you can't tell a shit app from a good app until you install it and see what happens. At least on Linux I can blindly install apps from the official repos and be confident they won't hose my system. The app might suck and not work for shit, but the package won't break anything else.

I believe that to be false. Do you have evidence to support that claim? Browser benchmarks?
Maybe using 'performance' to describe it is a bit misleading on my part; more like 'ease of use'. The one that instantly comes to mind is more active downloads at the same time. I believe the default is set to a max of 2 active downloads in IE at the same time, where there's a key that can set it to higher counts.

If you consider download time of 12 files at the same time vs 12 files two at a time, you might see the shortened overall download time as a 'performance increase', but for general browsing and such there won't be any difference that I can think of, and certainly nothing a human could notice.

Edit: And if you're not using IE (aka competent w/ internet) that doesn't even apply. If you ARE using IE, you're best browsing performance increase is to STOP USING IE

That's not cleaning or repairing (which I think is what this thread is about). You can make those kinds of changes without any kind of third party software: you can run a .reg file another user has prepared or you can make the changes with the built in registry editor.

Right. A reg cleaner (depending on which one) can make those changes though. Is that what they're for? No. I still stand by my original claim that reg cleaners are for repair, rather than performance, but this whole debate of a thread spawned by the notion of OS performance gain from reg cleaners.

All the OP wants to know is what good Freeware/Shareware is out there. While it's neither of those, Registry Mechanic by PC-Tools is by far the best reg cleaner I've ever used, and I recommend biting the bullet and buying the full version; it's only $23 on Newegg, and it's possible to find it for cheaper, if not free.

If your OS is wrecked but still functioning, it will probably feel more 'snappy' once the reg cleaner does it's work. If your OS is in good shape, the 'performance tweaks' it performs won't really do much. I've never had an issue with Registry Mechanic making the situation worse, so I doubt it will hurt to run the tweaks anyway, if you really want to.

To say a reg cleaner will not improve a fubar'd OS's performance (and reliability) is ignorant. They DO serve a purpose, they're just not a 'turbo-charger' for your computer as some would believe.
