registry entries are evil

Registry entries are evil! I am allergic to them. Whenever I am about to install a new program, my body senses the evil registry entry that is about to be added to my system. I start to sweat, my hands shake, my skin dries up, and boils start to pop up all over my body. Then I get a fever, 100 degrees Farenheit once.

Ok, so I just really hate the Window's registry. I know that for some uses, it actually can be useful for programs I guess (did i just say that?). But for the most part, its evil! Not only that, but I am amazed at all the stuff that actually installs registry entries. For instance, the PC Gamer Demo CD (the one that comes with each issue of PC Gamer), when you start this CD up, actually installs an evil registry entry on your system. Why does it need to do this? It clearly doesn't.

In fact, I hate registry entries so much, I recently got a program that monitors changes to the registry. (haha, I bet it doesn't get rid of all of its registry entries when you uninstall it).

So, does anyone hate registry entries as much as me?

No, not really...and I think you should get that looked at.

The big problem with a single database for settings is the possibility of corruption. This can and does happen and the results are never good. I have no idea which M$ mastermind concieved of forcing all the eggs in one basket. A better solution would be an OS-level "registry" and an application registry. And tough restrictions should be placed on what can update the OS-level registry.

The other problem is backing the damn thing up. With INI files you could simply copy an entire directory off to disk or tape, restore it later and everything worked. Now you're forced to dig into the registry, save several branches and hope it works after the restore.

Maybe it's better in Win 2000, I dunno, but it's been a major sorespot on the butt of Win 9x.

I'm with you Khold. I monitor changes to my registry with a program as well, although more for my knowledge of what exactly is being added than for the *hate* I have for the evil resgistry
