Registry Error on Windows 98 SE

When I start my computer it goes to Microsoft Registry Checker and starts restoring a "Good Registry" and asks me to restart, the problem is that it always does this, over and over and over again. I changed the memory and I still get this. What is the problem and how do I go about fixing it.

Hi,
This is a common problem if new harware installed incorrectly. However, without more details I can't be specific. How many times have you tried to reboot? If you haven't tried more than 6 times I believe, you can restore your old registry from a DOS prompt. Sorry, I don't know exactly how anymore, but it is possible. But, when did this happen? What things did you change? Did you do a virus scan, etc? Get back to us and someone will help.

Thanx for responding! The only things installed on the computer that have been changed recently is the hard drive, memory and cd rom. A new cd rom and hard drive have been installed and I checked to make sure they were put in properly and they are fine. In fact I formatted and re-installed Win98SE just to make sure that it wasn't a Windows related thing. The memory was changed because there was some bad chips and they were replaced with new ones that are definetly good (tested on a different machine). I did a virus scan and that reported right after the reinstall of windows and it reported nothing, in fact after the install it was fine for about a day. Nothing was changed hardware wise or software wise for that day. Thanx again for responding to my original post.

Boot your machine into DOS. At the prompt, type in SCANREG /RESTORE to restore one of the older registries. There should be 5 of them to pick from. You can also see the other commands by typing in, SCANREG /? There is also another command SCANREG /FIX that is not listed. If I remember right, the /FIX command can only be used after the /OPT command is done or it might be the other way around. Try it and see, maybe one of these will work to fix the problem.

Hey, I'm having the EXACT same problem with my new computer
1.4 Athlon, IBM Deskstar 40 GB.

My comp freezes, then i have to manually reset it. then it goes to the windows registry error window and tries to back it up. I then restart and goes back to it. For a few times actually too.

I will try that solution previously posted...but i'm wondering. just what causes this? is it a windows problem or hardware induced problem?
