I just dislocated my left knee last wed for the first time. I was wondering if anyone has gone through that and if you have any advice on rehabbing the knee and trying to recover?
Right now I'm trying to ice the knee down at least 3 times a day for 15-20 mins and doing straight leg lifts that the orthopedic doctor recommended. It's still a swollen mess, but from what I read online, it will be like that for a while.

Looking forward to your responses. Thanks!

Is there any ligament or cartilage/meniscus damage? Taking fish oil daily will help with inflammation so that might be a step in the right direction. I would suggest that to anyone who is active though, so you may wanna put that in your normal arsenal. Also, get back to me on if there's any damage. Depending on if there is and exactly what it is, I may be able to help.

from what i'm told no ligament or cartilage/meniscus damage. though they haven't done an MRI yet, so I'm not sure how they can be so sure there isn't any. The only damage I know of is I have a small bone chip. I will start trying the fish oil. Is it okay to fish oil and flax seed oil?

Wow...I could only imagine the pain you're going through. I've had some pretty nasty knee injuries in my life time, but never a dislocation. A fracture was bad enough!

Fish oil + flax seed is fine. Also, I'm not sure how to approach it if you have a bone chip. I don't know if that complicates anything. When are you scheduled for that MRI btw? The results of that would probably tell you how bad (or good) of a position you're in. What you want to do though is start strengthening/stretching the muscles around the knee (quads, hamstrings, calves) very, VERY lightly. Some bodyweight calf raises, balancing on one leg, hamstring stretches, stool drags (sit on a stool and drag yourself forward by extending your knee and dragging everything forward), 1/4 squats, and general movement/range of motion stuff while laying down (actively pulling your heel toward your butt, passively stretching your heel toward your butt with your hands or a band). There are a ton of things you can do. PM me and I'll try to give you a better idea or more specific explanations. Also, I'll be going to a PT clinic today to volunteer so I'll talk to the head physical therapist over there about if a bone chip would complicate things, etc. Lemme know about the MRI.

SC: well got the news back from the MRI, no torn ligaments or cartilage damage that we could tell for sure. I'm going under the knife on sept 17th to see the bone chip, if it's small they'll just remove it. if it's big, they're going to reattach it to the bone.

Right, that sounds about right. You really have to wait until they take the bone chip out until you start to do anything for it. After that, they should assign you physical therapy so you shouldn't have to worry about much.
