Which file do I have to install before going online?

You need patch MS03-039

Just turn on the internal firewall before going on line and you'll be alright 'till you can get patched.

I am not able to do that. I have peoplepc.com and when I try to open properties nothing happens.

You can disable the RPC (Remote Procedure Call) services before going online. If you can't do that you'll have to take your chances or get the install from someone else.

 

This the update you need to patch XP from the RPC vulnerabilities. MS LINK If your on broadband, dissconenct your network conection untill your patched up. If your on dial up, dont connect untill your patched up. It would be a good idea if you downloaded and saved all the XP updates then burn them to disc and patch up XP completely after the install and before you connect to the net.

All you need to do is enable the xp firewall before you initially Dialup. Then go get the patch

Another option is to slipstream SP1a into your install.

Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 1a and Create Bootable CD

program files > control panel > admin tools > services > disable rpc service

if you want to lock your box down do some research up on the other service.

i would never have a windows desktop directly connected to the net. at least have a nat box in between.

Yes it did, but you can also add many (though not all, IIRC) of the later patches and updates via slipstreaming as well. And I also recommend enabling Windows XPs firewall. It's simple, free and will keep you safe from Blaster (though I personally don't rely on it for much more than that). It's a great solution to this particular problem.

SP1 doesnt contain the RPC patch needed to avoid catching Blaster

I mean yes I got the blaster problem, patched it up etc. But after reformatting (about twice since then) I haven't ever been hit with the problem. And nope, I don't like installing patches when I don't need to, SP's excluded. IE I'm running XPSP1 patchless. It's not that prevalent.

That's easy....he's either connecting to a remote machine that's infected or a machine is connecting to him that's already infected.

That's the way most infections spread
