Reinstalling XP Pro

I should know how to fix this, but for some reason I can't seem to figure out what to do. Anyway, I am upgrading a friends PC from Win98se to XP Pro. He gave me a 120 gig hard drive to also install in the PC. I thought he wanted XP installed on the new 120 gig so I installed it there and also activated it on the Microsoft Web Site. As it turns out, he wanted me to run the upgrade on the 98se. So, now when I try to run the upgrade it keep getting an error message that says:

Setup cannot continue. Contact Microsoft Technical Support. (Error: 5FBFF58h)

I tried searching the Microsoft Web Site for this Error code, but it doesn't bring up anything useful. I am pretty sure it has something to do with the fact that I have already activated this copy of XP, but I could be wrong about that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

When you installed to the 120 gig did you use an full install package or an upgrade package?

I have heard that the full install will not upgrade an existing system and that the upgrade will not install without an existing system (at least an install disk for a prior qualifying windows OS).

Thanks DeeTees, I installed it on the 120 gig using the upgrade option with a qualifying Win 98se CD. It installed with no problems and activated with no problems. I just can't seem to reinstall it on a different drive no matter what I do.

Any other ideas out there. I'm really stumped on this one.

Yes. There were 3 or 4 programs that came up as possible XP problems. One of them was McAfee AntiVirus. I removed it as well as the other programs that were possible problems.

Yes, I rebooted after I removed the conflicting programs. I just tried the install again and I am getting 2 additional error messages.

ERROR
Setup cannot copy E:\i386\mfc42.dll to C:\WINDOWS\setup\mfc42.dll

and right after that I get a second error message saying the same thing except the file name is migisol.exe

After I click OK on these two error messages I get the error message in first post.

This seems really strange. I have done 25 to 30 Windows XP installations over the past year for different people. Some were fresh installs and some were upgrades. Never have had any problems like this before. The only thing that is different is that I installed this on the wrong drive initially and also activated it. By the way, I have since partitioned and formated the drive I originally installed XP on. Just in case that makes any difference.

Hope someone can help me figure this one out. I am totally lost as what to do.

Thanks!

Check msconfig and make sure that there arent any extra apps and/or drivers starting in the background that shouldnt be there. If that doesnt work, try unplugging all extra devices and install with just keyboard video and mouse.

STaSh, great suggestions. Unfortunately that was about #3 on things I have already tried. I also tried copying the i386 folder to C: and running the installation from there. I get the same errors doing it that way as well. I was going to try to boot the system from the CD and run the setup from there. but I don't think it will give me the option to upgrade the OS doing it that way. Anyone know???

Try different RAM...if that doesnt work, its probably a bad media.

Go here or call 1-800-360-7561 to get a replacement.

STaSh, thanks for all your help. I wish it was as simple as just bad Media. However, I think there was a serious problem with the Win98se OS that I was trying to upgrade from. I finally got fed up with it and called the guy that owned the PC and explained that the only way this was going to happen was with a fresh install. He finally gave in and said OK.

So I just finished a clean install with NO problems. Probably what I should have done from the start.

Anyway, thanks again for all your help.
