Reinstalling XP...

First time I'll have done this as I suspect bugs and glitches have accumulated beyond an ability of a fix (see http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=36&threadid=1584787&enterthread=y and http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...hreadid=1489179&enterthread=y&arctab=y )

I have backed up my data out of my favorites, my documents and desktop.

I have a SP1 disk but I will slipstream myself a SP2 install of XP.

Anything I should know? I'm not too sure on how to go about this reinstall with xp, on 98 it was reformat and reinstall, simple and easy. I don't want to reformat this time, though. Although I could.

Before you reformat and reinstall try just a straight reinstall of XP. You can do this without losing all of your data and it should reset XP back to a normal post installation state. If you're worried about losing data on a reinstall remember you can install over a Windows installation without reformatting the drive - that should be your last choice as it's the most drastic. If you end up having to reformat backup your entire documents and settings directory <C:\Documents and Settings\Plagiarist\> so that you can restore whatever was there when you reinstall.

So I can just boot into the XP disk and reinstall XP over itself?

Yep.

It will ask you to confirm during setup by making you type "L".

The first time you logon as admin (before you have created your own account), go to documents and settings and rename your folder. Otherwise when you logon with your own account the first time it will be a Name.000 folder.

Hey, with the new service pack 2 and all that, maybe it'll have the SATA drivers now and I won't need the disk and all that? OOOH WAIT can I use nlite to put those drivers in?
