relatively small and powerful laptop for +-$1000

Hi all,

I am looking to get a laptop in the next couple days (from the US), my last lappy fried after playing bioshock but until that point did alright with 2 year old medium specs.

I will use it a lot for games and digital work, but I don't need to run games at crazy settings or high resolutions, but I would be able to play things like AC 4 or BF 4 without slow down (or frying the laptop). I am a traveller so it would be nice if it was somewhat portable.

I am thinking between 13" and 14" for screen size, and a profile of around 1 inch. I could be persuaded to up my budget and possibly size, but would prefer to be as close to the lighter slimmer build as possible.

i liked the look of this though it is a bit out of my budget and I have heard a few bad things GIGABYTE P34G-CF1 Intel Core i7 4700HQ(2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 128GB SSD 14.0" Notebook

Also this seemed alright but maybe a bit bulky and heard bad screen and bad battery Lenovo IdeaPad Y410p

So anyone got any ideas? Even if they are less powerful and more mobile, or less mobile and more powerful. I am just basically looking for something to buy before my visitor from the states leaves (I am in mexico).

At that price (or any price, really) you're going to have to make a compromise. There are small laptops with a nice screen in that range (Yoga 2 Pro, for example), but you're not going to play shooters on them. There are big, heavy gaming monsters that are like mini desktops both in performance and size (the Y410p).

It depends on your expectations though. Games like BF4 are quite a demanding game, if you want it to be smooth at max settings then forget it at your budget.

Thanks guys for the advice. Just thought I would let you know I went for the gigabyte p34g at $1400 ( my missus said I could spend more cause its christmas). I'll have it in 4 days and cant wait!

a small and powerful laptop would be haswell based 11 inches Macbook Air for less than 1000.00!

I would look at best buy they sell great laptops. Also you could check out acer aspire series they run very well.
