Vdub said "don't plan on taking trips for the next 5-7 years". Just responding to that.

Perhaps I should've said "long term/far vacation".

Day trips are no big deal, it's just when you have to fly/go far for # of days....it becomes very expensive and there isn't much relaxing to do with a infant (depending on the kid of course).

He did ask for "relaxing" and "Vacation"....didn't he?

Another alternative is for OP/wife to take turns watching the baby...but you won't get to spend much time together (like you would probably like).

Wouldn't mind something like relaxing in a cabin near a lake, or a quiet beach somewhere. Any ideas? We don't want to be too far away from civilization, but as long as there is a town nearby were comfortable with it.

As a kid we'd stay in a cabin on Torch Lake, MI. Beautiful that time of year. Alden is right there, and you're not that far from Traverse City.

But yeah, leave the kid with family.

May I suggest Lake Tahoe! lots of cabins condos and nice hotels on the beach, if you look carefully you might even find one in not so crowded area... scenery is fabulous, you can even drive around for more beautiful sites. IMHO its better than any regular beach...

Although Late Aug/Sept is a bit late... water will be cold, but afternoons will be REAL nice...

Relaxing vacation with kids!? BAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

All vacations from this point on will revolve around the kids. Enjoy Fatherhood!

Vacation......took my 5 year old to niagara falls last month. 8-9 hour drive each direction and she was just fine. She got tired and crabby one night during dinner so we had to go back to the hotel early. Aside from that no issues.

now to figure out where to go in August before school starts...

We brought our girls (18 months and 4 years old at the time) to Disney World (3 hour flight) and we all had a great time. It just takes planning and organization. Pro tip: Crystal Palace has a prime rib carving station at lunch time. Just saying. However, that was mostly for the 4 year old's benefit. What, if anything, the 18 month old remembers is arguable.

For something more relaxing I'd suggest something like a rental on Cape Cod. The water on the bay side is very calm and the beaches are very level, IIRC (read: good for infant/toddler/crawler). It should still be beach weather at that time.

Another suggestion, if you have the money, is a cruise. They will have very infant friendly pool/water areas so you can sit by the pool and get some sun but it won't be as peaceful as other suggestions. They provide day care type facilities as well in case you and the woman want some mommy-daddy time.

When my son was that age, the only vacation we did was renting a cabin at a state park. They had a trout farm, and he liked seeing all the fish and water. I had a backpack/kid carrier, and we were able to go on some hikes as well.

when my wife and i have a kid we don't plan to take the kid with us on vacation until he/she is like 4-5 years old, unless it is within driving distance. but if it's out of the country or requires a flight, they aren't going to come. they won't remember it anyways and it seems like it would be a hassle to take a kid that young on a flight and traveling in general. that is one good thing about living near your parents - you can dump the kid off for a week or so to go on a trip.

We had the same mindset, but it changes when you actually have a kid. My wife and I find it incredibly difficult to leave our 20 month old daughter anywhere.

I just got back from San Francisco with my wife and daughter. It was her first plane ride. I doubt she will remember anything from the trip when she gets older, but the joy she had in the moment made it worth it for me. She had a blast riding the cable cars and seeing the sea lions at Pier 39, among other things.

The only vacation that is relaxing, while having a baby, is to have someone else watch the baby and go away.

Can not understand how parents can go on vacation without their children.

We went to Mexico with our 1yr old last year- it was awesome. Why would I want to deprive my kid of a vacation/change of scenery?

easy to say-

As a parent (daughter will be 2 years old in 2 months), I can't imagine going anywhere without her.

Went to Mexico last year with her. Going on Alaskan cruise next month with her.

As a father of two, THIS IS THE CORRECT ADVICE.

I think the "two" is the operative word. Couple posters above only had one. One kid is cool you can focus entirely on them and do the parent hand off thing to keep one fresh.

Two kids changes things and skews the dynamic. We rarely traveled anywhere without our first for the first 4 years. Add in a second and Mommy & Daddy need some recovery time!

while i don't have any kids yet, i've traveled with 2 couples, multiple times the past few years, who have left their kids to go on trips with my wife and i. they are all younger than 2-3 years old.

but yeah obviously i won't know exactly how i feel about it till after i have one of my own.

My kids are 5 years apart. I remember going to Myrtle Beach in 1996 with my first daughter. We spent the entire time worrying about her being too hot, too much sun, getting chilled in the air conditioning, getting sand in her eyes/mouth, bugs getting on her, crying in restaurants, changing diapers when there's no facilities on a beach...it was more stressful than staying home. 1st time parents are especially going to freak out because they're over-attentive. Expect to be staying in your room watching TV a lot due to baby-things.

The 2nd one coming along 5 years later was actually not as bad but not relaxing either.

The best time to take kids on vacation is when they're between the ages of 5 and 12. They get discounts on food and attractions, they're generally happy that they're out to somewhere new, and they like to play so you get a kick out of them having fun.

Before 5, they're too much maintenance and you spend most of your energy tending to them rather than enjoying yourself. They cry or need something every 3 minutes.

After 12, they start "getting bored" with everything, and you hear about it CONSTANTLY. Driving sucks, airports suck, beaches are boring, there's nothing to do, I don't like any of the food around here, etc etc. In their teens, they think vacations are actually "shopping trips" and want money every 5 minutes.

And that, my friends, is parenthood
