I'm looking to upgrade to a 4TB internal HDD in a Tower PC. It would replace a 2TB drive (I have 2 Seagate drives other than my SSD) in my main PC that are running out of room. I figured instead of a 3TB, go with a 4 instead. I have had good luck in the past 20 years, other than one failure (and that was a drive in a TiVo), I guess I have been lucky until I started reading the current reviews.

I was looking at these, but the failure rates are terrible (for the most part) based on 1 & 2 star ratings from Amazon & Newegg.

WD Blue WD40EZRZ ;

Seagate Green ST4000DM004 ;

Toshiba X300 HDWE140XZSTA ;

WD Red WD40EFRX ;
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?reviews=all&Item=N82E16822236599&ignorebbr=1
WD Black WD4005FZBX ;
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?reviews=all&Item=234-000G-000W6&ignorebbr=1

Since this will primary be for archive (backup) video files (movies), I was considering 5400 and 7200 drives.
Open for discussion.

(I hope the links are ok here, I didn't see anything to the contrary)

The WD Blue and Segate Barracuda drives are budge drives, some good, some bad. For an archive drive, a WD Red or Seagate Ironwolf is probably best. Toshiba is best on price/perf for 7200rpm with the WD Black being the best drive overall usually and has a 5 year warranty. I've had no problems with my Toshiba 7200rpm drives but I've heard the return/warranty policy is sub par, requiring you to take a prepaid visa card or buy a new drive with store credit.

I've had two lightly used Seagate drives die in the last year. Both right after the warranty period ended (1 year).

I bought my son a WD Red to replace the latest dead Seagate, so here's knocking on wood it lasts at least through the warranty period (3 years).

I beleive those have 5yr warranties BUT at $170 for a 4TB, that comes with kinda steep a cost.

Elsewhere this was recommended, but read the well composed reviewer comments about "coil whine" which I never heard of before;
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?reviews=all&Item=1Z4-002P-00141&Description=Seagate Enterprise&ignorebbr=1&cm_re=Seagate_Enterprise-_-1Z4-002P-00141-_-Product

Without going OT, why is there a problem with Linux and the lack of drivers for that Seagate??

I strictly go with HGST for my file server and backup drives. I got tired of the race to the bottom with the others. I have one WD Raptor still doing duty after ten years. Its power on hours is at 76209.

There were in the comments/reviews of at least one SG drive in Newegg, but I can't find which model I read them in.

Indeed. I Have 5TB WD black so far so good and WDs are just a very good HDDs I never had problems.
If I were you I would get that 6GB black because later you will end up buying more HDs if you go smaller size

Newegg and Amazon reviews are not a good indicator of reliability, for a lot of reasons. Mostly because for every failed drive that gets somebody mad enough to write a bad review, there are dozens or hundreds of happy customers who didn't bother writing one.

Backblaze publishes hard drive stats every year. https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-stats-for-2018/

Even the worst drives on their list are still pretty reliable. As long as you're doing proper backups and are able to replace a failed drive promptly, you should be fine.

The extra noise is worth it. RAID 6 with HGST Ultrastars.

I've got two 10TB He drives that I'm not using yet. The plan was to move to enterprise drives for my home server. It's coming, but life has had other plans for me, as of late.

I'm slowly switching out my 4 tb wd reds with 10TB Ultrastars in my file server. They are good drives and they run cool.
