Reliablity is #1 (seagate is the best?)
Speed is #2 (7200 or more ATA 100 or more or SATA I, 8mb cache)
Space is #3 (around 80gb should be enough)

Price at or below $150

Anything match this?

I'm very much in need of a HDD and don't need a speedy piece of crap

There is hard drive that is more reliable than others. Its all a matter of chances. Just like no cpu is guaranteed the same overclock, there is no guarantee about a hard drive. If you want speed and around 80gb, then the Hitachi 80gb is the best option. It is very fast. If you want something bigger, the Western Digital 160GB sata 2 is also one of the fastest drives around.

Hitachi 80gb

Western Digital 160gb

hmm ok my Abit IS7 board only supports SATA I
i think that's SATA 1.5Gb/s
wouldn't want to get a SATA 3Gb/s if i couldn't use that speed

I've been recommended Seagate alot for quality
not sure if this is true

I have 2 Wester Digital drives right now and they are very nice

on TigerDirect.com i found
Seagate / 300GB / 7200 / 8MB / ATA-100 / EIDE / OEM / Hard Drive for $89.99

What do you think of TigerDirect.com?
are 10,000rpm drives known to be reliable? i've heard they run very HOT

its sata, it will still work with that board. there is no difference between the sata drives since they can't be used at full potential, so even if you get the sata 2 drive on your sata 1 board, the performance will be the same. 10,000 are just as reliable as 7,200 or 5,400 or 15,000rpm drives.

yes, that Seagate 300gb looks good. but it will not be as fast as drives from Maxtor or Hitachi or even WD. It will run very fast and will have a 5 year warranty, so thats always good. I wouldn't mind buying it.

Newegg has the 74GB Raptor for $121 after $40 rebate. Pretty decent deal. Ends tomorrow at 5:30 PST.

so how is that possible that it will still go the same speed even though it's pluged into a SATA150 plug?

what do you think about this drive?

Again, sata 2 makes no difference over sata 1 since those super high speeds cannot be reached. They perform at the same level virtually. they will have the same transfer rates.
