Reliable LGA1150 MB under $100?

I've been building my own systems for years with mid to high-end MBs (mostly Gigabyte UD models), but it has dawned on me that in all that time, I've never upgraded them. By the time I need a new CPU, there are new sockets, or DDR3 instead of DDR2 memory, or USB3, or *something* that makes me end up buying a whole new motherboard and components, instead of sticking a new CPU on the old MB.

So this time I want to be smart and assume that I just need the thing to work well for two or three years at most, and then it will be too obsolete to bother upgrading. So instead of getting one with all kinds of future-proofing, I just want one that works great now, and will continue to work great until I decide that it's time to get a new MB with DDR6 or USB9 or whatever.

I've decided to go with a Haswell CPU. Looking around Newegg, I see that there are several Haswell (LGA1150) MBs for under $100, so that's what I want to get. But all the reviews I can find seem to concentrate on overclocking and crossfire and other high end stuff that I won't need.

So, can anybody recommend a brand for reliability and ease of installation? I won't be doing any overclocking or gaming or video editing, so I'll probably just use the integrated graphics on the Haswell, so all I need on the MB is decent sound, decent LAN, and easy setup and install. I'll check the details, like how many USB ports and stuff, after I decide on a brand. I'm sure that any MB that supports Haswell will also have UEFI, USB3, etc.

Oh, one thing. I like to hot swap SATA drives in and out using an internal cable and an external power supply. In other words, the SATA cable is coming off the motherboard, through a slot in the backpanel, and then hooked up to a bare drive outside the PC. I have a spare power supply with the pins jumpered so it goes on when I flip its switch. So I plug the external into the external drive on the internal cable, flip the switch, and it shows up in Windows like a USB drive, only with full SATA speed. Then when I'm done, I "safely remove" it by turning off the external power supply, and I can unhook that drive and hook up another drive in about 30 seconds, so I effectively have hot swapping without having to reboot Windows.

My current Gigabyte MB has two different SATA controllers, and this works with one, but not the other, which is fine; I just keep my permanent internal drives on the controller that won't hot swap. But I've never seen any review that tells whether a MB will allow this. Any pointers will be appreciated.

OK then, let me be specific. I found the ASUS H81M-A for $65 at Newegg, and it looks like it does everything I want (except, as usual, no clue about hot swapping SATA drives).

Anybody have any experience with low-priced ASUS boards?

hot swap should work on all SATA ports, regardless of whether they are chipset or mobo ports. and yes you can use internal SATA for external HDs, a bit awkward, but it works.

re: that mobo, the H61 doesnt allow for any overclocking at all, and you might want a bit of that, so a Z87 would be better.
I have a H61 from MSI, different brand but in the end the same barebones product. tbh im not amazed, stability seems pretty poor.

Like I said in the OP, I don't need overclocking. If this MB performs to spec, it will be much faster than my current PC, which is fast enough for me. If I wanted to do gaming, the video card slot would be a much bigger concern that the lack of OC.

I'm basically getting a budget system because I realized that with the spare parts I already have lying around (case, PS, drives, and monitor) I can spend $300 and have something twice as powerful as the laptop I was going to spend the $300 on. Since it's just for home use as a second PC and not travel, seems like the way to go.

under 100$ current Asus mobos - 3 B75s, 2 B85s and 1 H77 - all solid - if I were to choose another and didn't need vt-d and had a # of expansion cards and for a desktop - h77 for SB/IVB or h87 - if I were not going to be running 8+ or the equivalent+ Linux distro kernel in Fedora 19+ I would go h77 / IVB...

I've been quite happy with cheaper Asus, ASRock, and Gigabyte boards, over the last several years. Scratch that...the last decade. The ASUS H81M-A would be my choice for your requirements, else the ASRock H87M Pro4, for more RAM slots, and PCI. The current B-chipset boards aren't much cheaper, so you might as well get an H, on the off-chance you want to use one of the added features one day.

Verify SATA is set to AHCI, right off, and you'll be set.

Does anybody know if the "NO Z" overclock is still working on boards like the H87M pro4? I know it was back in the summer, and intel planned to force the vendors to change the microcode (bios) to make this not possible :/ I just wondered if anybody here had first hand experience?

I've popped an AsRock "pro" board before.AsRock Pro is NOT equal to Asus PRO.
They're a lot cheaper for a reason: they're a decent H series board with a Z series chipset put in. The Extreme6 are their competition to others' high-end OC boards. If you want more than a few hundred MHz, those boards are risks, IMO (of course, you know from experience why that is).
