Don't wanna start a huge war over the existence of god, cause I know it'll get nasty. But I was just wondering how someone could be so religious that they change their way of life just to "please" jesus or god.

There is NO scentific proof of the existence of a supreme being. Why would you believe in something you cannot see nor prove and have no evidence whatsoever that it exists. Do you believe in purple elephants? I doubt it... but why? cause you've never seen them? theres no evidence? How about god... you've never seen him... theres no evidence...

Im not religous. I think for many people, religion is a false sense of security.

There is no "scientific" evidence god doesn't exist.

You will find your spirituality when you're older, hopefully not too late.

He's talking about religion - the two are not the same thing.

Synonymous terms for the most part.

I believe in God but not in Christianity or its followers. I look at them and laugh. Most of them are sunday school loving fat Subway customers anyway. They abuse their kids' incapability of thinking at a very young age and believe what a liar told them to believe thousands of years ago: Jesus

Religion explains the unexplainable. That's the entire concept.

FYI, there's no proof a supreme doesn't exist either.

Not really. Religion more typically refers to the corporate, organized wing of spirituality. Spirituality is your personal beliefs and feelings.

When people ask me if I'm religious inclinations, I often refer to myself as "Spiritual, but not religious."

I will respond by assuming you believe in god...

You can't say that something exists without proving it. It is your responsibility to prove that it exists if you say it exists. You cannot just say something is a certain way and it is true until someone proves you wrong. That's not how science is.

honestly I cannot see how people cannot want to believe in either a god or a heaven, heaven more specifically....to me thinking that once you die you are done forever is just a little too depressing...while I am not a religious man I still like to have faith that there is something more to life than just what we have here and that our consciousness as a species is a little more monumental than just the crap we deal with on a daily basis.

There is nothing to prove that God exists either...

I don't believe in god.

Though I also don't believe in the scientific method. Simply because it was developed by humans and thusly flawed at the core.
Scientific method has been wrong COUNTLESS times. So really, don't approach a subject like this with such a rudimentary understanding.

Contradict yourself much, troll? Nice flamebait

While I'm not religious, I'm agnostic, these kind of question of easy to answer with a little logic. Religion is not about changing your life - you are part of your religion, and your religion and beliefs are a large part of who you are. Faith is what it is all about.

Although I'm not religious (agnostic actually) I do NOT discount people who are. Its simple really. Saying religion is not scientific is complacent. Why discredit something becasue it doesn't fit the scientific method? If someone says they have had some life altering encounter with god, i think that may be possible. Most of it is probably stress induced hallucinations, but i think it is possible. My philosophy is this: Life is undisputed, It is a miracle unto itself. Think about it- the universe, our planet, the evolution of organic material- seems pretty far out to me. So if all this is possible, why not some higher power? Why not an afterlife, even in a scientific perspective (another dimension maybe?) I'm a firm believer that the human mind can not fully grasp the world we live in. (ie, try explaining physics to a dog) Most of religion is used to justfy ones ultimately meaningless exsistance, but i think there is a real possibilty of something more.

Yeah, it's proving a negative, and it's antithetical to one of the foundational tenets of scientific philosophy: falsifiability. It really doesn't matter though, because the same argument will be used ad nauseum in any thread on religion.

"I believe God exists."
"Prove it."
"You prove he doesn't."

And 'round and 'round we go.
