I could sell my small a$$ condo (800 sq ft) here in socal for $600+K and move to austin and buy myself a nice 3200sqft house in the $300K range and still have money left over to live on 4 awhile...

Besides, cost of living is soo much lower in Texas than here in socal...

 600k for a condo!
I bought a 4/2.5 house ~2000 sq ft for about $140K right here in the suburbia Austin.

I can't imagine spending 600k on a condo, let alone 300k right now. :Q

Well, unless you tell us what kind of work you do, the best answer anyone can give is to go work at fast food/retail.

True, what can you do / do you do. I mean you must have some sort of skills since you currently have a condo worth more than half a million dollars. Considering your affluence, buy something near the UT campus as you will be in the middle of the city with great access to everything, and you can afford it.

If you want the country life you only have to be about 10 miles from downtown heading south or east. If you go north, god forbid, you will be in the middle of the Computer suburbs. I would suggest against it, but I am a midtown Austinite that had to relocate to Houston.

I've been working in the IT field since '96...came back down in '99 to LA/OC and worked for a few companies b4 I struck out on my own. Started my own shin-dig in 2000 tailoring to small to mid-size biz...maintaining/improving/securing their IT infrastructure... I've basically have done everything..from break/fix, to helpdesk, sbs, to exchange and windows migration, hotpsots, wisp, etc...

Will make a small fortune on my condo when I sell it and on top of that should make a pocket-full of cash when I sell my clients, as well...

My main thing is to secure a job b4 I make a move to Austin that will hold me over for 1-2 years b4 I strike out on my own again...as a consultant (cuz that's where the money is...)

Anyways, I've seen that u can get a nice size mansion in Austin for around $700K..and that was what I was thinking of... I wanna live like a rockstar...dang it!! 8)

With your doltish use of grammar (i.e. "b4"), I am somewhat surprised at your relative success in your business.

So your condo is actually paid off and you own it out-right? Or is there still a mortgage on it?

Anyhow, a few years back when I looked at jobs in Austin, the job market in certain sectors was pretty tight. Austin is a big tech city as well, so people in your alleged line of work are a dime a dozen - much like California, I suppose.

When I'm interacting on a forum it's a little different...vs when i'm dealing with clients.

Yes the condo is currently in escrow as we speak. As for the other comment..don't hate....if u were living in Cali you would understand how insane the real estate market is here... It's all about locations...and as I said b4, I can sell my condo and purchase a decent home in Austin and not have a mortgage for the remainder of my stay there...

dont take us for fools, the only reason you relocate is to cash in before the real estate market collapses. Otherwise if you only own a place why do you need to relocate ? People that don't have a place and must rent have much more reason to relocate.

What field? If it's IT/Software/EE, there is AMD and IBM hiring like crazy. I have strong faith that you can get a nice job in 60-90 days.

That's the point i'm trying to make....if everyone is predicting that the real estate market here in Cali is going to drop 10-15% by the end of 2007...I would be foolish not to cash in now..... The other reason 4 moving, why live here in a 800 sq ft condo in Irvine when I can live like a rock-star in Austin, Texas...? (Besides, I do believe there's no state tax in Texas).

No income tax, but the sales tax is higher.
And although they say the cost of living is lower, I really only found it in the Real-Estate market.

<--- Transplant to Sugarland (just southwest of Houston) from the Northeast.

I looked at my cost of living in Connecticut vs. my Cost of living in Texas, and again, without real-estate it turns out roughly the same.

Don't forget to offset your lower cost with a lower salary also.

Just to let you know my magic genie prediction skills say we will most likely have an income tax for the state within a few years. I say this because they have yet again said that using property tax to fund education is unconstitutional so they sent them back to the drawing boards, and the only real alternative is for them to institute an income tax (which has been pushed for a while). But the cost of living is really good and housing is in good shape, so if you can set ujp a job you can probably live pretty well. And also Austin is a nice city to be near.

BLASPHEMY!! They'll just jack up the taxes on cigs another couple bucks Actually the new business franchise tax could be construed as a state income tax, except the employers are paying it..its slightly more complicated than that but yeah
