So does the city I live in. In fact, they passed an ordinance telling me what days of the week I can water my lawn and for how long.
Welcome to a drought year in SoCal...

Move to New England right now, and nature will take care of watering your lawn, daily.
Why should we conserve??? It's not as if the water we save is going to be shipped to places that need it -- it's a regional resource

The idea of saving water EVERYWHERE is just ridiculous. Here on the East Coast (mid-Atlantic to be more specific) we have enough water for everyone for quite some time. We had something like 15" of rain in the last 2-3 months, and crops are dying or rotting as a result of all the water. Why should we conserve??? It's not as if the water we save is going to be shipped to places that need it -- it's a regional resource.
However, for places like SoCal or the Southwest or even Atlanta, which hasn't seen rain in awhile, it makes sense to run conservation campaigns.

Every gallon you waste, is a gallon that didn't need to go through the costly water treatment plant. Water conservation is just as important in areas with plenty of available water, because it reduces the need to continue to build larger facilities and the supporting infrastructure to meet increasing demands...pretty simple concept really

Water Saving campaigns by local government are stupid. Namely Santa Clara County.
I save water. In fact, we use less than half of what they'd like us to use. Do we get anything? No. They raise our rates as a thank you.
Water rights should be a federal issue not a state one. It stupid when other states get flooded while California, Nevada, arizona and others are in need of water.

What's wrong with conserving water?
PSA-Just because you can be a dickscarf doesn't mean you should be one.

If it's so costly, why isn't the water bill higher?
If utilities are priced correctly then people will "waste" exactly as much as they can afford to waste.
