Remanufactured toner

Howdy all,

Not sure if I'm in the norm on this or not but wanted to find out.

I have an HP machine that I've always used HP cartridges in. A while back I decided to try cartridges from Monoprice.com because they were far cheaper.

I emailed monoprice.com before I ordered and was assured I'd get the same 3500 page yield with their as I would with the HP ones.

Every time I change a cartridge I always print a config page and this is what I found.

Last HP Cartirdge - 3400 pages
Monoprice cartridge #1 - 1800 pages
Monoprice cartridge #2 - 2500 pages.

Nothing has change as far as what's printing, where I'm printing, what I'm printing on, etc so everything else should be the same.

The 1800 is barely half of what I should have gotten and the 2500 is better but still agging far behind.

Is this normal for reman'd cartridges?

I've emailed Monoprice asking for a replacement for one of them to even it out so we'll see what happens.

I've had good luck with my HP 4000 using genuine carts with generic toner - most of the HP carts can be refilled at least 3 times before there is any problem with print quality.

There are special tools to do this on eBay, but I simply melt holes on the top of the cart using a soldering iron, pour in some toner (make sure you order the correct type for your printer), then seal the hole with some duct tape. It's saved a ton of money, and I haven't had any of the problems typically associated with poorly remanufactured carts.

LOL! Laser printers don't use ink. OP's question was about remanufactured laser cartridges with toner.

I've run 100% reman cartridges at work over the past 4 years -- and the yield is inline with HP's official cartridges. Keep in mind yield rates are calculated at 5% coverage (basically all text). We run bills/statements/text through our machines. If you run photos, or any highlighted text, or big black borders, excel graphs, etc through it your will lose overall yield. Also make sure you shake the cartridge at the end for an extra 100 pages.

I buy mine from CDW though -- Rhino brand maybe? Theyer ~1/3 HP price -- so even if I did need to buy 3 for every 2 HP cartridges -- I am still saving a fortune.

The problems I do have are:
- Occasionally the toner cartridge has a bad transfer drum -- make sure you mark the insertion page count, so if it starts screwing up 1k pages in, you have documented proof it was a dud.
- The cheapest cartridges don't replace the transfer drum -- and could be recycled multiple times. They end up filling the pritner with toner and causing shorter maintenance cycles. I bought super cheap cartridges for a Hp3xxx series in the office, and it ended up neeing to be serviced every 60k pages instead of HP's 100k suggested. (We ran ~15kpages/month through it).

Quality remans are awesome. Avoid the cheapest.
