Remap keys on keyboard?

I just want to add some keys from European languages to my normal keyboard, so I can use them in all programs. This can be such a pain ...

I found this link on the web googling around but it did not work:

I basically want to add some special characters to my normal keyboard layout.
Ideally I would access them by pressing Ctrl + Alt + E for example for É or Ctrl + Alt + A for Ä (and Ctrl + Alt + a for ä).

Otherwise I would like to assign those keys (for example) to the right-Alt or the right-Ctrl or the Caps-Lock ....

How can I do this? The above way did not work ...

There's a game device called the Belkin Nostromo N52 Speedpad. Now, it's designed primarily for games but it's basically just a fancy keyboard. What might interest you is that it allows you to assign combinations of keystrokes to individual keys on it. These are called macros, like pressing "a" on it executes "ctrl" "alt" "delet" or whatever you want. Maybe you could use it to program those special characters. It is 1/3 the size of a keyboard and I have mine tucked to the right of my keyboard all the time. It's great for games too

Great attempt but it doesn't work
This does not support any foreign characters which are exactly what I want to add ... (E.g.: Ä Ö Ü)

Having thought about this again, you could install the keyboard layout for the language you wish to use.

Do this with the 'regional options' and 'keyboard' control panel applets.

I successfully type Polish special characters (like ? and ?) on my UK keyboard by installing the appropriate layout - only problem is that some non-letter keys are in different places.

Otherwise I want my US Layout!!
