What's really sad is California had an opportunity to stop this. Part of Schwarzenegger's gubernatorial campaign was stopping things like this. After elected, he tried to keep his promise by having a special election. One of the propositions in the special election would have required a union to get an opt-in letter before making withdrawals, rather than an annual opt-out to stop them.

The unions waged a massive campaign against Schwarzenegger, attacking the cost of the special election, not the merits of the propositions. Their misdirection persuaded California voters to admonish Schwarzenegger by rejecting the very laws they had elected him to enact. Obviously, they also didn't get to save a dime on the special election, since that money was already spent.

I remember that well. As much as I came to dislike him later I have to give him credit for trying, The problem was that he just completely caved in after that election never to try again as far as I remember. The public unions protests were massive. Public unions have owned this state for decades now. That's why nothing ever seems to get done regarding them, except ever higher pay etc. Just take a look at California's unfunded pension liability for public retirees for one example, I would post a couple of links, but I would probably be accused of posting fake news by the union side people. I did look quickly at to sources, the LA Times, and the Sacramento Bee. Not sure about the Bee but the times is not exactly a conservative newspaper.

feel better? yes, I am conservative, and I think you may be just a bit lazy. That information is very easy to find. Like I said, it seems any link posted by conservatives is called fake news or too partisan, any link posted by liberals is totally accurate and not debatable. Just my opinion

California is doing great after we got rid of Republican ability to obstruct by giving Democrats supermajorities. All of the sudden the problems that were thought to be intractable started getting solved. We raised taxes, did businesses and talent flee? Nope, they are paying even more to live here. The free market has spoken. Funny how that works. And all the Republican states who we mocking California, where are they? Getting automated and innovated out while their economies stagnate. But they still make of our "Socialism" while we kick their ass in Capitalism.

Serious question, Why do they have this as an Opt-Out Program vice an Opt-In Program?

Seems logic would have it as an Opt-In unless you want to take advantage of people being too lazy or incompetent to opt-out exactly the correct way... You know like a scam or a mail in rebate. You forgot to dot one of the I's so your rebate was rejected.
