i got 1.4 ghz tbird and 256 PC2100. opens in photoshop in about 5 minutes. after that, you're fine

Anybody figure out how to get it open without photoshop or any of that fancy stuff? I've waited for 15 minutes with both MS Image preview and image editor. (Don't have Adobe installed) Nothing yet. It worked for a while but I have just the top bar and no image.

The government site is the best 155kb download on my cable. It allows 200 users also. If anyone needs it, just use that. It looks like they have a fat connection.

I am currently distributing the picture as land_shallow_topo_west.jpg and land_shallow_topo_east.jpg
The file is 47 MB and 68 MB respectively.

I used Photoshop 6.01 to open the picture and it took about 3 mintues to load the image. My rig is AMD XP 1700+ @ 140 MHz with Crucial 512 MB (CAS 2)

I am sure anyone with PC133 256 MB SDRAM will do just fine.


UPDATE: I used WinRAR to compress the file and it is now only 37 MB and 60 MB respectively.

There is a new version of Kazza which "supposedly" contains no spyware. Get it here.

Filename now becomes land_shallow_topo_west.rar and land_shallow_topo_east.rar

Awesome, im downloading both of the HUGE image files at the same from Rakkis' site at a combined speed of 197k/sec (100 and 97).

THe ultimate test of not only if it will crash but rather how long it will take for my pos computer to freeze up trying to open one of em lol.

The .tif.bz2 files are compressed with bzip2. I don't have RAR installed at the moment, but bzip2 is just as good if not better. If you're using a recent *NIX, you've probably got bzip2 installed. If you're using winblows, get cygwin, which includes bzip2.

Beware, however, that these files do take a TON of RAM to view and edit. Even my P3 Linux box with 1.7 GB RAM was swapping like crazy when I started cropping stuff in gimp.
