McConnell was so dedicated to obstruction that he filibustered his own proposal.

He should never be let off the hook. Mitch McConnell has done more damage to the US than any politician alive today, Trump included.
Mitch let the CR come to a vote in the Senate so, in this particular case, he didn't f' us over. But today is a new day. Without Ryan to play catcher in the House, I expect Mitch will revert to form.

Mitch has already said he would refuse to bring it back up for a vote.

Edit: also I’m pretty sure the CR passed the House as well.

Ryan added the wall funding to the House version of the CR. Trump never actually vetoed the bill as the House and Senate never sent it to him as their versions were different and never reconciled.

People are saying.......

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said he asked Trump why the government couldn't be reopened while the two sides work to resolve their differences.
"I asked him directly ... He could not give a good answer," Schumer said.
After Democrats explained their plan to pass measures funding the government -- including the Department of Homeland Security -- at least temporarily as negotiations continued, Schumer repeatedly asked Trump why he opposed that approach, the person familiar with the exchange said.
Eventually Schumer asked a third time for one reason Trump wouldn't accept the offer, and Trump responded: "I would look foolish if I did that."

Trump really gets along with Chuck & Nancy better. He should have worked with them from the beginning because at least with them if a bargain is made they hold up their end of the bargain.
His current crazy train does not.

The "no wall" funding bill passed 100-0 in the senate, it would pass overwhelmingly in the house. Trump could veto it like he's promised and then the senate could override it. But that will make Trump look bad, so there's a chance McConnell won't even hold a vote on it until Trump announce that he'll sign it. And Trump "announcing" he will sign it means jack shit.

As I understand it. The D's need 13 Republican Senators to pass a C.R. or Budget; they need 20 R Senators (and about 55 R's in the House) to override a veto. Is there any chance the R's would vote to override a veto, or would that be too insulting to Dear Leader? (The Senate passed the earlier vetoed C.R. 100 to 0!).

It often sounds like Mitch McConnell controls the Senate, almost as if the other 99 Senators are irrelevant! What would it take for the Senate to say "Shut the fuck up, Mitch!" "We respectfully override the Majority Leader"? 51 Senators? 60 Senators? 27 Republican Senators with Dems irrelevant?

The bottom line seems to be that Trump will feel that he HAS to build that damn wall. If he is perceived as weak on this issue and/or he loses the support of Limbaugh, Coulter, and some of the other whackos, much of his base is going to desert him. If that happens, he is gone and he knows it.

It's obvious Trump is an idiot, but he has a conman's instincts. He knows he has to deliver on this. He won't back down. It's up to congress to neuter the toddler.

The jerk painted himself in the corner when he had his little chat with Nancy and Chuck and claimed he would take the blame. Dems better show no mercy, cause this really is a killer for his base.

Trump owns this. He said so, then followed through on it by killing the bi-partisan bill (that passed UNANIMOUSLY). The fact that McConnell is an utter coward and is now dancing to Trump's tune should not dissuade the Democrats. They'd better not back down or I will be ultra-pissed. The shutdown will be short term pain with the hope that long term relief is gained by Trump surfing his silly wall (hey! there's a use for it) down the drain.

It's a Trump shutdown and they should be repeating it every chance they get, including reading back the idiot's own quotes on the subject.

From my understanding McConnell has said he will refuse to bring any bill to the floor that Trump has not straight out said he supports. This is for the exact reason you say, that bill would likely pass and that would embarrass Trump. From my understanding of Senate procedure there's no action Democrats can take that McConnell can't block so long as he doesn't face a mass defection from other Republicans. They can deny the motion to proceed on considering the actual bill and even if they wanted to tack it on as an amendment to another bill he can just 'fill the tree', which is basically McConnell making up BS amendments to take up all the amendment spots for any given bill.

If someone can get 60 senators to sign on to a CR then sure, they can do whatever they want no matter what McConnell wants. Absent that (and that seems highly unlikely), there's not much to be done.

Guess who isn't getting paid? CBP. If Trump drags this out long enough, we'll probably start to see a lot of absenteeism. That'll really enhance border security, I'm sure. Plus it's all great for morale, too. It's a good thing Trump stationed troops in the area to step in & fill the gap should it occur, huh? Like they'd know what the fuck they were doing.

For the Wall! For the Great Wall of Trumplandia!

The Senate already passed a bill last month with bipartisan support. Why can't the Democrat House simply approve it and override the veto?

I believe that bills don't technically carry over like that between new congresses.

That's too bad, considering the Republican controlled Senate that passed a bill to keep the government open now wouldn't pass that same bill again only a couple weeks later.

His current crazy train does not.

Trump saying "he would look foolish" just shows that there is no compromise. All Trump has done is repeat the mantra "Give me 5 Billion dollars so I can say I won and you lost". How are they supposed to find a compromise with that?

McConnell has said he won't allow a vote on a bill if the president says he won't sign it, which precludes the chance for a veto override.

It seems that the GOP will abandon democracy before it abandons its unpopular positions. Now we are seeing that not allowing voting is pretty much what the modern GOP is all about. But we should have known that when they refused to hold a hearing on Merrick Garland.

The GOP is simply not acting in good faith within the Democratic system. They don't have the votes for their proposal. That should be it! Holding 800,000 people's jobs hostage is not honorable or acceptable.

Reportedly in the meeting that just finished Trump said he'd keep the government closed for "months or years".

That doesn't seem like a real tenable position.

He can try. But eventually, the rest of the gov't will go right around him.

Like I said before Trump is panicking and responding the only way he knows how, which is to double and triple down. Next he'll probably just say he's fine with eliminating those agencies entirely and forgetting about the whole thing.
Yup and his supporters will cheer about reducing government waste.
