Remember the days of Quake in 3d? I would love to, so how can I with a GeForce Vid card?

I've had an "urge" to play some old time Quake I and am having quite the time getting it to run in 3d using a GeForce DDR or Any GeForce card. Much less anything NOT 3DFX.

Point me in the right direction with a link? Or explain it all out via email, whichever you prefer, I appreciate it much.

Thanks a heap!

hmmm... bizarre... I'm running Quake, Strife, Duke and Quake 2 on a GF2 and I never had any problem?

after you install quake and GLquake

make sure youd delete the Opengl32.dll that is in your quake directory. I think its a 3dfx dll or somethign odd like that, and quake tries to use that instead of your Nvidia drivers.

Packet hit the nail on the head.

Do what he said and you should be good to go.

Geez now I'm gonna have to dig out my Q1 CD...
I wanna see how it flies on this 1 Ghz p3 with a 64 meg GF2 GTS.
Gonna have to get all the updates and all that...
I got mine via pre-order directly from id, arrived by Airborn so many years ago. I still remember the day, I had a Quake website running way back then - lots of people downloaded qtest1 from me... Nostalgia

Update...
LMAO !!!
I got it all installed and working GlQuake woohoo.
I remembered the benchmark of starting a new game and without moving bringing down the console and typing "Timerefresh" and hit enter.
HAHAHAH 327.5 FPS
I remember when I first got the GL version of this game, I was lucky to get 12 FPS at 640x480! Seems like it was actually a lot less so I always played in software mode!
What a difference a couple years can make eh?

Now, how do you get it to go to higher resolutions? I wanna see how it looks at 1600x1200x32

there's a lot of ini changes you can make too, to unforce the 8 bit pallete and what not, I forget the details. I just did this recently, and I remember about how people raved about the see through water command you could type in consol. I tried this out, and I realized on the third level (the one that is in the start up demo, I think), the walls didn't reach the floor in a water pit filled with zombies, and you could zombies feet on the other side of them. And this was a feature way back? Ouch.

I am wondering if my FPS is limited by my video refresh rate? It seems to be about double my refresh rate?

I would really like to know if anyone has any hints about how to get it to play at higher resolution than 640. It says you have to enter it from the command line, but when I do it tries to start and then dumps back to the desktop.

I am trying: glquake.exe -width 800 -height 600
Dumps to desktop.
when I just run glquake.exe it runs at default 640x480
It does look great though, and it's so fast...

Well I got it running @ 1600x1024x32 - Not done much with the palette quite yet. Just enjoying some serious Quake Goodness.

Also, the video resolution command is " glquake.exe -width 1024x768 -bpp 32 " You can adjust accordingly.

Still to date, there is not a smoother, faster running, and just QUICK action game as Quake 1. Half life is great - Serious Sam is groovy - Unreal Tournament is beautiful and all... but Quake 1 takes me back to the days of having 32 players w/o lag. Gawd it was great.

Favourite level: Border.bsp - Basically there are 3 teams. Border Patrol, Mexicans & The Men in Black. Mexicans run - Border stop 'em, Men In Black, kill anything that moves. YEAH.

I agree, nothing has the same feeling as quake. Man, I loved all those old capture the flag levels.

Loved? Heck, I LOVE 'em. I've been playing with some buds [7 of 'em] for the majority of the day. Lemme tell ya, it takes me back. Also downloaded "Qdqwav" or Quake Done Quick with a Vengence. Basically "they" complete Quake on Nightmare level in 12 Minutes plus change.

Thanks for the answer about the resolution - I will try that right away.
Last time I tried it I got a Timerefresh rate of 359 FPS - taken at the beginning right after "Start New Game" this was default Glquake.

hmmm... I still get dumped back to desktop after it tries to start.
It runs great at default 640x480x16 and in fact I can run it with the command line:

GLQUAKE.EXE -width 640x480 -bpp 32

But when I try to put any other resolution in - like:

GLQUAKE.EXE -width 800x600 -bpp 32

It tries to start, disk runs a while and dumps back to desktop.

I am running Win2K, P3 @ 1Ghz, 64 meg GF2 @ 210 core & 410 mem. Looks like I have the 1080 detonators in there. Any other suggestions?

You've got the shortcut wrong Wiz:

"GLQuake.exe -width x -height y -bpp 32"

where x and y are your desired screen sizes. Make sure to set them both correctly.

I tried it, when I put in:
GLQUAKE.EXE -width 640 -height 480 -bpp 32
it starts up and under video it shows I am in 640x480x32
However if I try:
GLQUAKE.EXE -width 1024 -height 768 -bpp 16
it says "Starting Quake" then switches video resolution (I can tell because the monitor preset refresh rate for 1024 shows up on the screen) then it does a bunch of processing and then dumps back to desktop.
It must be encountering some kind of an error, but it doesn't tell me about it.

SpYdEr2723, either run Winquake or Glquake. DOwnload them, first install QUake from your CD and then one of the other two progs.
