Hey everyone,

I read through a few posts on here but nothing really coverd my question. I am looking for a program that will let me connect to either computer from work to my home using Remote Desktop.
I understand there is a server called a VPN. I have a dlink router but, i understand that its not a feature that is included with the router. In looking to spend a lot on money, this is were the corp. business questions didnt apply.

Is there something out there that I can use?

THANKS,

V

You don?t sound like an assistant admin, remote desktop and virtual private network are two different things.

I have to agree with that. NO offense, but even an assistant admin would know how to do this in his sleep.

Sounds like you need a VPN server on the network, and then use RD to connect to whatever machine you want.

A linux box with an outside connection, run PoPToP or some other VPN server, make sure you give DNS info to the clients so you don't have to remember IPs. RD should run over this with no problem.

And I too mean no offense, but if you better research all of this real well before you implement it. It would be very bad to do it wrong and leave a hole in your network security because nobody is going to challenge your decision to do it. Security policies should exist to protect users from their admins just as much as the admins should be protected from the users.

Guys, I work as a night time processor, I have all the permission in the world to use remote desktop to connect to my home pc. I use it for school work and other things. I work for a small company and yes I am an assistant admin, Im am in training with alot of this stuff. Whether you guys believe me or not, I could honestly care less.

Reinstating the question...

I have two pcs, one records tv shows using snapsteam, Id like to be able to set shows to record if Im at work and cant get home in time to see them. I just want to know how to connect to both pcs using remote desktop if I can.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I had a question and I asked it, if you guys want to play police thats fine.

Let someone else answer the question.

The question still stands...

Set them to use different ports for remotedesktop in XP pro. Then forward the respective ports in your dlink. Will have to change the profile in the work PC to use the non standard port as well.

SO in example pc 1 : 192.168.0.100 : 80
pc 2 : 192.168.0.110 : 8080

And I can choose the pc I want to connect to by changing the port.

sort of, but I wouldn't use those ports

Try some high order 4 or 5 digit ports.

Keep in mind, it won't be secure in this setup.

You're better off putting VNC on each machine and using that. Much easier to set ports and connect to specific ports IMO.

VNC won't be any more or less secure then Remotedesktop. The real way to do it is tunnel either thru a 3des or 256AES tunnel.

Standard port for RD is 3389

Do you have XP Pro or home? If Pro, continue below. But if Home, you'll have to figure a way to initiate the session from there, i.e. impossible.

Ok, so you made it this far. Set you router to forward port 3389 (or whatever port you choose) to the internal (192.168.1.xx) IP.
At work, open RD and put in your IP address at home with the port at the end as shown by others above. Now, this will be your WAN IP at home, not the internal IP. So, if you have dynamic or static, it might be easier just to goto dyndns.org and set up a dns forwarder. Works great for me.

Once you have that set up, click connect and log on.

For the second PC, do the same thing with the router but use another port. Connect with the same IP/DNS name and the new port for the second machine. Easy as pie. Takes about 5 minutes to set up.

There is variety of ways to use VPN. It depends on the level of security and ease of setup.

If you go for broke you can do it with the VPN embedded in Windows2003, and Windows XP.

The slightly more expensive Routers like the Linksys BEFVP41, are not VPN appliances they just support VPN transfer better than the Entry Level Routers..

I am not familiar with the products in you links. Sonic has a line that is very popular in small business setting.

===============================

Virtual Private Networks(VPN)

These are secured private network connections, built on top of publicly-accessible infrastructure, such as the Internet or the public telephone network. VPNs typically employ some combination of encryption, digital certificates, strong user authentication and access control to provide security to the traffic they carry. They usually provide connectivity to many machines behind a gateway or firewall.

NOOOO, don't buy sonicwall. OVERPRICED!! ( I know, I have a pro 200 @ work and got rid of an original SOHO.
Get a zywall or even better a SNAPGEAR. SME 550 for $375 and you can have 500 vpn tunnels (3DES, 256AES,etc) No extra licensing fee for multiple users or VPN. LUV my snapgear!!!
