I need to access my work's computer that's connected to the corporate wifi. There's no way for me to forward ports. Teamviewer has been working great for a few weeks until it detected that I'm using it for work purposes and it's since restricted my access. Are there any other alternatives? The host is running linux.

Probably Chrome Remote Desktop or Zoho Assist (free plan)
Ugh Chrome remote desktop is having me open up ports.
  • Outbound UDP traffic
  • Inbound UDP responses
  • Traffic on TCP ports 443 (HTTPS) and 5222 (XMPP)

Zoho Assist crashes when I try to log in through google or it says no internet connection.
Any others?

If Work allows you to work from remote they can easily open a port for you.

The IT department at my workplace is useless.

There is nothing you can do if your IT dept has total control of the firewall.

The reality is employees usually are not allowed to do activities not related to work.

One of my previous coworker was fired because she printed one sheet of her family photos using company's inkjet printer.

==

If the company lets you remote control to your desktop before and now IT dept can't help or wouldn't help, I don't know who else can help. Some companies do have incompetent IT dept.

Team Viewer does have paid version that will work in corporate (domain) environment.

If your corporate IT detected and shut down your use of Teamviewer, it seems to me they don't want you accessing the work computers from outside. Seems to me continuing to find a way wouldn't be in your best interests.

QFT, and actually it is Not Some but rather Many.

That said, it can not be an excuse for any "Genius" employee to by pass and remote connect..

In todays world Doing so (even more so if the IT is Not good), no matter what the excuses are it puts the company Network in Jeopardy.

Allow employees to work remotely does open up a lot of risks to corporate network.

Data could be stolen, virus/malware also could be introduced.

Most companies don't allow remote access unless absolutely necessary, and usually limited to the boss and IT guys.

TeamViewer detected that I was using their software for commercial purposes. Actually, I heard that almost everyone has been getting that message with TeamViewer as if they're trying to get people to pay for it.

FWIW, I'm working at an academic research lab and I have my own personal machine for machine learning that's not connected to the institute WAN, rather it's using the company WIFI. I don't think anyone cares if I remote into it. I've talked to my bosses about it and none of them care.

If you are using Windows Home Edition, then it's free, forever. If you are using Teamviewer on Pro/Enterprise in a Windows domain, it will detect that and ask you to pay for it after 30 days. Don't know about Linux environment.

Also no idea what you meant you worked at academic institute, yet using your company's WiFi?

Is your company adjacent to the institute, and you brought you own company's PC into the institute and your PC still connects back to your company's WiFi network?

WIFI is just a Replacement to wire and in order to connect to a "company WIFI" it goes through the Network.

With all due respect if you have permission then it might be personalty OK. However your statement about WIFI demonstrates an issue that people do steps in Thecnology while Not fully aware of what the total Picture is.

So you are on same LAN network as others.

Your boss and IT don't care is because they don't want you to use remote control.

Case closed.

Anydesk. Simple, easy to use, far faster than many.
