Remote Desktop

I would like to remote desktop into my computer from outside of my network. I know that i need to set up the firewall and port forwarding on my router, but how do i tell what my ip address is for my computer? like i can tell what it is when i go to myip websites thru Google, but its the same for all the computers at my house? please let me know. thanks

You need to setup a port for the specific computer you want to connect to. For example, say you have a computer with the IP 192.168.2.5. You set up a rule so that anything coming in on yourip:83 goes to that machine.

Hey adqttr,

To solve your problem, click start > Run and type cmd
When the DOS prompt appears then type ipconfig
This will show you all your network cards and their basic configs. This is where you'll want to get your internal network IP from. It will usualy be a 192.168. or 10.10.10.

Then you will want to go to your router and set a rule under port forwarding to forward port 3389 to your internal IP address that you got before. Personally i would disable the software firewall as you will not need it because your behind a router.

Don't forget to get your outside IP address also. It will be in your router config or you can look it up on the net with websites like ipchicken.com

Then from outside of your home network ie... at work you would use the outside address to access your remote desktop.

Edit: this is assuming that you are using windows remote desktp and not other remote desktop software.
