get an automatic transmission and use that thing they made in ocean's 11 (remake) not only will it start remotely, it'll drive remotely too.

yes, however it must have a gear lockout (or something like that) that only allows it to start when not in a gear.

I've seen some people on subaru forums install new clutch relays in order to make the remote starters work on manuals.

a friend's car hit a wall after remote started his car. somehow, it was in the 1st gear when it should've been neutral.

Ok, you don't NEED a "lockout" but your car does have the chance of jumping when left in gear. But yes it is possible and it is slightly illegal here in MD atleast, not sure about NY. The amount of cars that actually jump are pretty low though.

Some cars, like my Subaru at least, actually have a neutral safety switch on the trans. That makes it easy to wire up a remote start since there's a nice switched line that you can use to make sure you're in neutral.

Why are they illegal?

Seriously, there are ways to prevent anything bad from happening. Depends on the make and model and I would suggest keeping your e-brake on when your car is parked. Even if you leave it in gear, it shouldn't move.

You'd have to bypass the clutch switch to let it. But someone on a board that I go to did actually manage to run through his garage by doing that. To do it safely, you'd also have to install detect switches to make sure that the lever isn't in ANY gear. It's possible, but requires a bit of work to make it reliable.

Personally, I wouldn't try it.

I have it in my car, just make sure It is in neutral everytime you park, and put the switch off every time you borrow your car.

Wouldn't it just stall before it actually moves?

No. The starter motor typically has a lot of torque and can move the car on its own.

Nope. I learned this the hard way when I was approximately 6 years old. My father had taught me how to start the car's electrical system (i.e. you turn the key "2 steps", so to speak). One time I decided to go out to the car and wait, and I wanted to listen to the radio, but I turned the key too far. For some reason, the car was in first gear and the parking brake wasn't applied, so it started rolling - and it was parked in front of a 1.5 m high ledge

How is something slightly illegal? Do you slightly get ticketed by a person who is slightly an officer of the law if you slightly get caught?

It's either illegal or not... which?
