"Remote starters should be hooked up to cars with automatic transmissions only! Even though a car with manual transmission can be fooled into believing the clutch is pressed using a relay, if the car is in gear, it would jump hitting other cars or causing personal injury to people nearby. It is illegal in many states to install a remote starter on manual transmission cars. It is illegal in many states to install a remote starter on manual transmission cars."

I drive a manual and had the same questions myself when thinking of remote starters. Glad I got one. Whenever I have the vehicle still running, I would have to set the hand brakes then hold down a button on the remote to activate the remote start function. When I shut off the vehicle it is in neutral (level ground). Only then can I remote start it.

If I don't go thru that process, there's no way anybody, say a mechanic, can out of no where start the car up if I don't preset it.

What I fear more is when I take my vehicle for repairs and the technicians leave in in 1st gear with the car off. If one time they start the car with it in gear the car will lurch forward and may hit somethhing. I make it a point to notify them and have it written on paper to put it in neutral when off to prevent this from happening. Better safe than sorry.

If the remote starter can be fooled into thinking the clutch is pressed, shouldn't you be able to set up a circuit such that the remote starter would only work if the vehicle is out of gear?

yeah, it's rather annoying. My car is stick, and I have to drive a van around for work occasionally... every time I start the engine, my left foot goes for a clutch. The bad thing is... where the clutch would be on the van... there's the foot styled parking brake

There is usually a switch on the clutch pedal, or around it, its a ground switch. Cut the wires to the switch and attach them together fooling the what ever into thinking the pedal in pushed down

At least this is what was on Manual cars around the 80's and 90's. All you would need to do is get a regular remote starter, cut and splice the wires together, and pray you never forget to leave the car in gear when you get out and start it the next day. I used to do it to my manual cars, not for remote start, but just so I wouldnt have to depress the clutch to start the car, found that very annoying.

cliffords G5 concept 650 has it as an addon feature. it can do remote start for auto and manual tranny's

all you have to be careful of is not leaving the thing in gear, though i believe they have a sensor installed so that the system knows the car is in gear and therefore will not issue the start command. i dunno what people are taling about with these cluth swtiches... all the manual cars i have driven (ford mondeos, focus, renaults, toyotas....non of them have a switch on the clutch to make sure you dont start with the gears engaged..... could start all of them in gear if i wanted....would look like a complete tool bag though.)

North American vehicles require the clutch pressed in to start. You can be in gear, though (obviously).

it makes so much more sense to have the car cannon into a few children, killing or maiming them

Over here, I'm glad it exists, lest someone who is less than proficient with a manual (i.e. 85% of the population) has to start my car for some reason and ends up crashing it into a wall.
