remote view or ext monitor for dslr?

the 3.5inch lcd on my canon dslr is too puny to see things clearly for important work. especially doing video and photos where im using f 1.4. sure it might look focus on screen, but sometimes totally out of focus when i view it on the 4k monitor. even zooming in and out doesnt really help....

it looks great for $130 because i can use my 6inch phone or even better..an android tablet or windows tablet!
or should i go with the traditional ext monitor with hdmi input?
please advise if you have even better options.

If you haven't, look into a hood loupe. A pro fotog I've shot with uses once extensively.

do you use focus peaking? no evf?

I've had cameras with built-in wifi (RX100 IV, QX10, Fujifilm XP90, LG 360cam). the wifi connection can sometimes be laggy, depends on multiple factors (wifi chip/antenna on camera, surrounding environment on wifi interferences etc). don't rely on it

There are portable external monitors available (hook up to HDMI on camera). Depends on your budget and needs

The CamRanger is a pretty solid option. The ipad app is well done. I used it one night for astrophotography where I set up my camera on my tripod then hid inside my car because it was so cold outside. Remotely controlled my camera and viewed shots from the comfort of my heated seats!

i didnt even think of loupe! will have to try that in the future. cant believe that thing is $80.

basically it works exactly like cam-fi but via the usb cable, not wireless.

update: the DSLR Controller app works great with my canon dslr and samsung tab s2! slight 1 sec delay with video feed, but it's more than good enough!
