Facebook's Graph Search has certainly caused quite a stir since it was first announced two weeks ago. We wrote earlier about how Graph Search, still in beta, presents new privacy problems by making shared information discoverable when previously it was hard—if not impossible—to find at a large scale. We also put out a call to action—and even created a handy how-to guide—urging people to reassess their privacy settings.

By locking down your privacy settings, you can help prevent your information from appearing in searches run by strangers and protect your friends from showing up in results. (We've updated the how-to accordingly.) But even when you've set all your settings to "Friends" only, it turns out you can still appear in strangers' search results.

Uh-huh. You don't understand how something that is fine to comment on now could be retroactively seen as terrible.

Imagine making anti hippie-gay remarks all over FB in 1960, if it existed. Flash forward to today. Problems? You bet.

Say I was 24 years old in 1967, and I made a few hippie comments. Imagine if FB existed back then. That would be 44 years ago. I would be either dead or an old person. Who cares?

500 years from now? Nobody is going to care what we did in 2014.

People should worry now. It's too easy to run a name check on someone using Google. If you're worried that a future employer might stalk your FB page then just deactivate it. It's gone. Once you get a job reactivate it again. Also, watch what you put online. No drinking, drugs, etc.. Don't talk badly about other companies and people. Common sense stuff.

I know it's a necro thread but still wanted to share some info I got last night.

Friend works for an engineering company that does some government work. All new hires and contractors must pass a background check for a security clearance. He told me 20% of potential hires do not pass the background check due to info found online by the company they hire to do the checks. (Another 20% do not pass due to other reasons - criminal records, etc.)

That's 20% of people who otherwise would have been hired, losing out on a job because of stuff found on the internet.

It would be best to assume that companies that provide background checks as a service to other companies are not hampered by FB privacy settings. They aren't being hired to simply do what you or I can do with search engines.

I left Facebook back in 2005. A friend invited me in or when it was only for the Ivy League. I came. I saw. I left. The real world is a far more interesting playground. My wife left 4 years ago. Anandtech is enough.
