Not having a Facebook or any social media is a liability with some companies now... Eff it, I don't want to work there anyway.

I know that's the case, and I think it's ridiculous. But if I was in an industry where your personal FB and twitter mattered, I would set up social media profiles but only use it for business-related content, like people do with LinkedIn.

Well you can just make a group list on facebook where only different people see what you want them to see. And just make some very positive posts public so you look like an upstanding employee when they go to check. And if they add you just stick them in the group that only sees the positive work posts.

That's garbage because it causes me to take ownership of my content. Facebook should already be hiding anything I deem questionable without me having to put any effort into it. They should also stop attempting to sell advertisements yet keep the system free to use. They can absorb the cost some other way. I already have a huge profile in Google that they get in exchange for my using all those services (I love my Android phone it tracks where I go if I let it) so I don't need another one.

Doesn't change the fact its a colossal waste of time. How many pregnancy/engaged/wedding/baby/dinner photos/beach photos/political rants does one need to see?

Facebook in concept is great, it's just too bad that the ones who run it got greedy and decided that advertising revenue was not enough. They have to sell people's info and track them and stuff too. I would love to see a Facebook replacement come in, one run by people who are privacy conscious and can be trusted. Someone who is in the open source industry and makes it for the sake of providing the service, not for the money.

The hardest part would be to publicize it though. I'm sure there's a million facebook clones out there as it would not really be that hard to make, but nobody really knows about them.

There's two: Diaspora and Ello. I've played around with both, and there's definitely a reason why none of the clones have taken off.

The reason Facebook is doing this is because they went public. Now they've got shareholders to keep happy. Which means screwing over their users.

It's been horrendously difficult to build our company page due to the new algorithm that limits the reach of your posts, unless you pay to "boost" them. If you don't, well, We have 13k likes but the average post might get see by 200 people. Just such a blatant cash grab.

Twitter is just a far better platform for promotions and news.

Very interesting article in this month's Wired magazine by a writer who "liked" every single thing he saw on FB for a while so he could see what the FB software would do.

If any company required me to have a social media site that wasn't directly related to social media, I would not work there. They have marketing teams for that. Joe Schmoe in IT doesn't need to cater to the masses.

They added a button now on peoples pages to "unfollow" them. That way you don't have to see lamer posts all the time if someone is lame. It really helps clean up your feed.

If you want to see their lame posts though just go to their page.

"Facebook" isn't the biggest problem. Getting off facebook isn't about facebook. It's about controlling your identity, and controlling your life. Facebook gathers data, and puts into a neat database for anyone with money or a tin star to take. It's not about mom seeing your tit shots from Friday night. It's about insurance companies probing your life to see if they'll give you coverage. It's about potential employers running a psychological profile on your /friends/ to see if you get a job. It's about the government snooping on your "terrorist" affiliations. A "terrorist" is what they say it is, and it can change in a single announcement by the government. Think you aren't a terrorist? Think again...

I should create a program that ties everyones posts here to a Facebook profile with their real names.

I will make millions and then promptly get murdered.

In today's job market you do what you have to do, and it sucks that companies can force this kind of thing but it's either that or live on the street.

The worse is the companies that require your facebook password. That seems to be a big trend in the US. What I would do is have a separate account I use for work so I can keep my personal one... personal. Though the issue with that is if the company finds out...

Take control of your technology, and don't accept control from others. Eben Moglen isn't a tl;dr speaker. He's probably the greatest speaker you'll find regarding technology policy, law, and philosophy. "Cliffs" are a disservice to him and yourself.

Then you aren't thinking hard enough. The harm isn't as obvious as someone holding a knife to your neck, but the harm is there none the less. Non-obvious harm is worse than obvious harm, because it breeds apathy and complacency(re-read your own post). With apathy and complacency, the problem tends to not get fixed until it's too late.

Really?, yea, Facebook is making a killing off all humanity but I'm as unimportant as it gets, I have no criminal background to worry about, my net worth is squat so I should be upset about what Facebook does?, I log on once every 2 months or so but that's about it. I'll take your word that Eben Moglen is on top of this situation, I just don't care enough to spend 1.5hrs to glean all that information.

You could be making that claim of any non-danger though.

I have a Facebook but haven't logged on in months and haven't posted anything in like a year or two. I prefer using the phone if I want to talk to someone.
