I got these last year from them and have been pretty happy. Occasinally I get errors writing to the hard drive, but it is a Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 40 30GB 7200rpm drive. They are definately the best bang your $$$. Good luck. I wouldn't mind picking up a few more.

what you mean errors????????????

And more specifically, can these errors be attributed to the use of the removeable tray? Portability is nice, but not at the expense of data integrity .

I think your mobo have to support ultra 66/100 inorder for the drives to work. Or just get an IDE controller card from the staples deal that we had. I try to put one of this on my old abit bh6 and it won't detect the drives. When I put it in the newer motherboard, it boots right up.

So are we saying that people have been having problem with data integrity with these removable bays. Or was that just due to user error...

If there has beed issues with people i would like to know

From my experience these things are BAD news if your system is on continuously. Me and two other people I know had the same problem. After the drives ran for awhile (awhile being anywhere from a few days to a few weeks) in one of these things, the drives overheated. All sorts of weird stuff started happening. One out of five reboots the BIOS wouldn't see the drive or the drive would LITERALLY power itself off and then respin back up while in the OS. This was not just bad luck or drives, as several different maxtor and western digital drives were used in different systems. The fans in 95% of the plastic "hot swap" IDE trays I've seen are pretty much useless for cooling the drive sufficiently, especially 7200RPM ones. I don't know for sure, but I'd be willing to bet using one of these things cuts the MTBF on your drive in half.

As usual, I don't know what anybody is talking about.

Heat disapation would seem better with this type of installation. My 3 1/2" dvive bays touch one an other. there is no room for air to flow. These hold a 3 1/2" device in the middle of a 5 1/4" drive bay, leaving space all around the drive for the fan to circulate air. I do admit that drives fit tight in these adapters, but not as tight as in normal 3 1/2" bays.

If there is a problem with these I haven't found it. I use one with my Sam's Club 60 Gig drive, another with a 20 Gig drive. No problems.

I do not doubt that some people have had read errors when using these devices, but these same people have had milk go sour while using these devices. I mean there should be some coralation between the two items.

My two cents.

I have (2) computers setup with these same drive-enclosures. To avoid the heat issue using 7200rpm drives i have an 80mm fan strapped above the enclosure, blowing down onto it. Before adding the extra fan, I had run the enclosure with a 20G 7200rpm Maxtor through an hour of gaming, afterwards realized the fan was a good idea. This setup has been working great for about 4 months, using Maxtor 20G and 30G 7200rpm drives.

My systems-(1 at work, and 1 at home) get powered down every night, so i can't comment on the extended use problems with these enclosures...

For the money i think they are a HOT DEAL!
Just make sure you consider the heat issue using the 7200rpm drives.

Larry the 3 1/2 mounting area only has a tight fitting on the sides of the hard-drive. Hard drives dissipate heat through the top and bottom, mostly the top.

These drive enclosures have about a 1/8" gap above the drive when mounted inside the enclosure. And the cooling slots are tiny, i had thought about opening these up a bit with a dremel, till i went with the 80mm fan mounted above it. With the 80mm fan the temps are under control, problem solved.

Wouldn't the cooling fan that's included with these things be enough? Also, how's the sound on these? I got a BayCooler for my drive before but unplugged the fans because those rackety ol' things were annoyingly loud.

The tiny 486 fans that's included should be just fine for a 5400rpm drive. But i found some 7200rpm drives can generate a bit more heat under load than a 5400 does.

Please, i didn't mean to say you MUST mount a fan like i did.

Years of IT work has taught me to get a bit paranoid about heat when dealing with computers. Heck, All my computers have 120mm-panaflo fans mounted in the front, this added cooling helps me sleep at night.

Good Luck

I didn't say you did. Was just asking a few questions. But, knowing my case, I'll probably add another mod near 'em anyway just in case! I just hope these fans don't start giving off that lovely grinding sound...

Bought four of these a while ago. I use it mostly for backup drives which I turn off most of the time. Works great, and not bad for its price...

re using the Maxtor IDE controller -- avoid it. Maxtor is a rebadged Promise card. Lookup the words "promise data corruption" in deja.com and you'll find tons of complaints.

Has anyone tried the MC coupon + the Organizer coupon? Or is it only one promotional code per order?

My solution for using trays like these is to leave the top off of them, and leave the bay above them empty. Like BreakApart says, they mostly dissipate heat through the top of the drive, and this allows plenty of that dissapation without the need for a fan.

I HATE noise, and so deliberately run low-powered setups (e.g., small die size intel chips, low wattage video cards and burners) in big towers with lots of room to keep case temps down and minimze fan use. So far, this combo has kept me from problems, even with 7200 rpm drives.
