While everyone might assume dual layer DVDs that hold 9.4GB of data are always going to be way better than 4.7GB DVD-R disks holding the same amount of data, this isn't necessarily true. A dual layer disk will hold two hours of video at the highest DVD data rate which is 9.6. To fit the same movie on one layer DVD-R, the data rate is cut in half. But it isn't like the quality is cut it half. In fact many store bought DVD movies are actually on single layer DVD disks, so if the movie is two hours, the data rate is half the max. Many others have a data rate somewhere between and the extra space is takes up by added DVD material. Just because the manufacturer of the DVD decided to use the maximum data rate with the movie, doesn't mean it is always going to look better. The encoding process plays a big part as does the quality of the original movie. In my opinion, some store bought DVDs with dramatically lower data rates than 9.6, sometimes way lower than 4.6, still look fantastic.

I've used things like DVD2one and DVD shrink with good results, even with movies three hours long. The better the original DVD looks, the better your results will be when you compress it to one DVD-R disk.

No, this company was created in May. It's been there for years and they are top notch reliable. I have ordered plenty of cd sleeves and envelopes from them over the past year without a problem.

That is something I don't understand. How can they read pass one layer?

The laser pickup focuses on either the inner layer or the outer layer...the outer layer is semi-transparent so that the inner layer can be read.

If double-sided DVD-Rs were available, you could get ~9GB per disc. I think the only recordable format for which double-sided media are currently available is DVD-RAM, though, and the discs are hella expensive.

yeah i use the pcclub ones, work great so far, at 2x.

anybody notice that nobody really has ritek's in stock, even some stores are out of the +R's? did they go out of business? factory shutdown cuz of SARS? some places have them in stock, but a lot are out, leading me to believe the ones who have them in stock had them before.

I have a question for those people who are using the 50pk dvd's from PC Club. Please check to see if you have this problem too! The spindle I bought seems to burn fine at 2X in my A05, and so I didn't bother to check by playing it all the way through. But later I noticed that out of the 25 or so dvd's that I've burned, 20 of them stopped playing (freezed) toward the end of the movie. Also, I can't seem to make copies out these discs either, both dvd decrypter and smartripper give error messages (at about 90%) while trying to read them. Anyone?

I had read that Ritek was not going to produce any more disks other than 4x.

Shippy, this is a good thing. Think of all the production volume of Ritek and probably the other players too, now all focused on 4x media. That brings the cost of 4x media down, and hopefully quickly brings it down to "1x" media levels.

Yep, I picked up one of the 50 packs from PC Club, and have experienced exactly the same problem with my A05. It seems that pretty much every one of them that I have burned to capacity has this problem - the only ones that have not turned out to be coasters are the ones that were not. I've also had a problem with some of them erroring out before even completing the burn. I would suggest avoiding these discs if you're using an A05 - I've subsequently switched to Riteks and have not had a single problem.

Oh man that hurts, I was looking at these last night at 4am (MST) and they were still $.89 each.
I updated my rom last night but was going to wait until today to test with my last Ritek 1x before nabbing these.
I feel like crying...
