Removing a Heatsink

Okay folks, I have two questions this time. I read an article that says the HSF I got OEM doesn't cut it with the stock fan, but once I put the notoriously loud Delta 38cfm fan on it, my C/W will go down to .23 (My eyes lit up when I heard this because I figured it meant I wouldn't have to remove the entire heat sink....I could just screw the fan off and screw the new fan on)...

Then I started thinking straight.

Should I be fine removing a fan with out removing the entire HSF from my 1.4 T-bird?
I have a Speeze HSF (Here's a link for the review)

Also, if I do need to remove my heatsink, how do I do it?

I've removed fans from heatsinks while still attached on the mobo. Just be careful not to press down too hard.

What are your cpu temperatures (at rest and under load)?

I believe that so long as you're under around 55C when under load your HS/F is doing its' job (I use a P3, so anyone feel free to correct my temp. suggestion if it's low/high).

Play a good session of your favourite game (minesweeper, solitaire, and tetris don't count ) that you know is pretty intensive, then check the cpu temperature afterwards (if you don't have a hardware monitor for windows, just reboot quickly and check the temps in the BIOS).

Don't risk crushing the core. Hell, remove the motherboard if you can and carefully remove the HSF, then replace it and re-install the mobo.

Yeah...u don't wanna crush ur core. AMD chips is fragile. Take out the entire HSF from the mobo. Fix the new fan, install it back.

this is sort of on the topic . . .a cpu fan horror story that happened to me a total of 2 hours ago. i ordered an epox-8k7a/athlon 1.2G pre-assembled combo from accessmicro. in order to keep the cpu secure (apparently they often come loose when shipping across the country), they hot glued the heatsink clips to the latches on the socket. well here i come along wanting to install my new svc goden gate 40 fan, and realize this hot glue is making the removal of the previous heat sink impossible. when i finally got the glue off, along with it broke off the plastic notch on the side of the socket. i tried hot glueing the broken piece back on, but to no avail. now its impossible to get the new heatsink on there at all. so i guess that means a new motherboard for me . . .*sigh* . . .unless anyone else has a suggestion.

anyway, moral of the story . . .you can never be too careful when dealing with the heatsink, cpu area . . .play safe!! its all fun and games til' somebody loses a motherboard!
