Removing and installing new CPU

I currently have a decent setup right now but am changing the processor on it. Now I've never removed or installed a processor before so I want to do it right. What are the proper sets for removing my current processor and then inserting a brand new one using the current heatsink (since this new processor is OEM and doesn't come with one).

Simple. (it would be very smart to have your self grounded out too!!!)
1) Remove HSF clean compound off of bottom set to side.
2) Lift rod on side of Processor striaght up, lift CPU up, set aside.
3) Install new CPU push down the rod add AS5 per specs.
4) Add HSF.

Directions are available on Intel's and Amd's website. For amd, some folks have trouble pressing on the lock down lever (the final step for installation). For Intel, you have to press evenly to get all 4 corners to engage. I believe videos are available for both. Also, be sure to line up the cpu according to the position of the lock down lever and marker on the cpu. One more item: give the heatsink a slight twist side to side before removing to break it free from the cpu. If you lift the heatsink straight up first, you may damage the cpu pins by forcing it out with the lock down lever engaged.

ok do i lift the processor locking mechanism up before trying to take out the heatsink and how do I go about cleaning the excess thermal compund that is on the old heatsink that will be used on the new processor. Also when installing the new processor (fx-55) where and how much thermal compund do I put on.

NO!!!

I would run the machine let it get hot warm.
Shut down pull the plug.
unlatch the HS twist and remove. Old HS usually stink the the CPU so be carefully, you do not want to remove both at the same time. There is a alcohol type to remove compound but the truth I have use paper towel before. there are directions at there website but usually a about a size of a grain of rice.

So if I can decipher your post correctly:

Get the pc starting and leave it on for a little to get it warm then shutdown. Leave the processor latched in while I unplug the heatsink and twist to remove it. Clean off the heatsink, and install the new processor. Put about a grain of rice of thermal compound onto the new processor and install the heatsink.
