Ok, I apologize ahead of time, this is going to sound more like verbal diarrhea than a question, but I have the outlines of a plan, but I can't get my head around it. I'm looking for some smarter people than me to take this up.

I have a KK266+ (actually I also have a non-plus KK266 too that I need to change the caps on to get it to run XP chips.)

ANYWAY, as far as I know, as of the last BIOS update, the fastest multiplier available was 14x, which is useless (since there is no CPU that uses it). This puts the maximum usable chip at 13.5x133=1800 or 2200+.

Now of course some fsb overclocking might get you to about 2400+, but I want more.

Now here are the pieces, I hope someone can make sense of it. My understanding is that the Athlon XP-M(obile) chips are handpicked cooler running XP chips. They are also multiplier unlocked.

I found this article: http://www.ocworkbench.com/2004/guides/unlockwk43update/ocw_unlocking_xp39+.html
which explains how to modify a desktop XP chip to make it a Mobile chip in order to unlock the multiplier for changing it by software under Windows (bypassing the Bios). As part of the article, they explain that cutting specific bridges would allow a software set multiplier of up to 24X even if your motherboard doesn't go that high! It is suppose to work with KT133A chipsets.

CPUMSR can then be used to set the multiplier under Windows XP.

What I can't pull together is this:
1) The motherboard must support PowerNOW! and have the registers properly configured. Since no desktop motherboard is expected to run a mobile chip, I'm assuming this is trial and error. So does the KK266 mobo's support PowerNOW?

2) What are the limits on an unmodified XP-M? Can they just be run as is on a KK266 board? I saw something about a 2600+'s running at 2.4ghz aircooled. That's some serious OC.

3) I have no understanding of SoftVIN and the voltages for running these chips correctly.

4) How fast could a modified non-mobile be made to go? 3192mhz at 24x133? I know that's an underclock on the FSB. 3600mhz with some good pc150s? Obviously, there aren't such chips, but does that mean nearly anything?

Any insight would be great, I'd love to push the limit of this board but I just don't know where to start.

I can understand replacing the caps on a mobo if you just want to get it working again, but to try to enable the usage of newer chips that the mobo does not support? I guess if yer in prision, and have nothing better to do and can't get a new mobo......

You can definately go higher than 133 on the FSB. Back when I was using a KK266 & Tbird 1GHz I ran it at 150MHz. And that was more a limit of the Crucial PC133 I was using than anything else. I've gotten it to boot at 160 FSB before but it wasn't stable. With some nice quality RAM it'd be manageable, however I don't know how available >PC133 RAM is nowadays.

I can't help you with your other questions. I haven't run anything faster than the Tbird in that board. I can't help but wonder why you don't just go ahead and buy a nForce2 mobo? But whatever your reason, good luck!

Perhaps this link will help you out some. It served me and my KK266 well: Iwill KK266 FAQ
