i have read many times about how people crack the core on the cpu when they remove the HSF, is there a special way to remove the HSF?
i have a duron600@998 and i upgraded to a T-Bird (yea!) so i need to remove my taisol 733, but don't wanna crack the core since i wanna sell the duron
any suggestions on how to remove it?

Hey there. I had to take my stock fan off of my Thunderbird to put on my FOP38. I didn't do anything different than when I put it on the first time. What I did was press down on the stock HSF clip, then pull the clip forward, away from the socket. I did the same for the FOP38, after I applied some Arctic Silver on the core, and experienced no problems. I hope this helps a little. Good luck!

they don't crack them when they are removing the heatsink, they crack it when they put it on(angling the heatsink so that all of the weight is on the edge of the die) so long as you don't push the 'sink at weird angles or anything, don't worry about it

I've heard the clips on the Taisol are a real pain to remove. I know a few people who have broken them and other things trying to remove them one time too many.

great... i am switching to fop32 since taisol doesn't provide hardcore cooling, though it was real cheap and its been very effective, i need a little more power, along with the 60 mm to 80mm adapter w/ a panaflo, it should be much better
thanks, hopefully it will come off safely...
after i installed the HSF, i decided to buy copper spacers... got em cheap too in a group buy by jeremey at coldshop.com
thanks guys

The most guilty parties for cracking cores are the Fop38 (clips too heavily sprung - they're fine if the clip's flattened out a bit) and Thermaltake Orb coolers, due to their circular shape giving an uneven pressure distribution over the surface of the chip. General consensus from other forums is that you have to be very careful to keep the HS/F dead level while to play with the clip. Most core-destruction occurs when putting them on
