i know a few of you guys have done this...i have a swiftech mcx-462 heatsink and i want to know 1) how to remove the IHS from the P4 in the easiest way. 2) can i just sit this heatsink on the proc without anything between (i know one of you has a lapped penny) 3) would it be better to have a lapped IHS or none at all?. Thanks for any help.

Cliff

edit: pics of a p4 sans ihs would be helpful...can't find any

This is how I did it:>

put the CPU on its side near the edge of the table (IHS on one side (left), pins on the other (right))
then I held it firmly and used an exacto knife and the table as a leverage point.
slide the exacto knife down to the corner of the IHS, starting about 1/3 from the top of the CPU.
rotate the CPU and do all the sides

once all 4 sides are done, swap the CPU around, pins on the left, IHS on the right.
Then repeat the above steps with the knife..but this time, youll be starting at the part that you didnt cut in the first round...
Once your all done, carefully slide the knife all around the IHS and youshould be able to twist the blade and remove the IHS

took me about 15 minutes, then I cleaned up the CPU with some laquer thinner..looks perfect

that's exactly what i did, too. however, 9 months of use had hardened the glue and it was very difficult to remove the heatspreader. however, i did get the damn thing off (after half an hour or so), and my temps went way down.

is this black stuff just at the very tip edge of the ihs?..how deep do you have to go?

The black stuff is (I think) the glue/epoxy, its pretty hard after a while..but if its warm..its kinda like rubber gasket stuff on a car

Its just hard to get in there..you have to start and make a small in-cut..then go over it, each time pushing the cut in farther..till its through

dbwillis, how much of an issue is heatsink mounting?

does the difference in height make it harder to get good contact with the cpu?

what about mounting pressure? wouldn't it be less as the springs will be more relaxed?

is this not as big a deal, or did you have to modify your heatsink/retention to make it work?
