removing XP 64 damages sectors?

Hi - this is my first post here. I had XP 64-bit installed on a new Hitachi 160 SATA for about a week, then after driver frustrations removed it be deleting the partition, then installed XP Home. Installation failed, so I called MS tech support (aka New Delhi) and the guy had me run chkdsk /r - which ran the rest of the night. What was a fine working drive now has 8gb worth of bad sectors. Does MS punish people for removing their OSs by whacking off a portion of the hard drive?
PS - I'm waiting for SUSE 9.2 to be released...

Ever think that it might be your hard drive that's defective? It does happen you know, even to brand new drives.

Yeah, and the defective hard drive will match nicely with the defective DFI mobo I bought at the same time. Must be bad karma.

Tried formatting the drive when you install xp pick full format.
