One can only wonder how small driver packages could be if they stuck to coding just the driver and no app-specific optimizations. And probably things like "shimmer" and such would go away.

I would be a VERY happy camper if my GTX stopped shimmering in BF2. It bugs me more and more everytime I play it.

That's interesting. Changing the file name doesn't cause problems with running the game correctly?

lmao @ Rollo..

Rollo you do realize that vid drivers run at ring 0 and can take down windows due to a bug? you simply DO NOT make a deviced driver change and shove it out the door without EXTENSIVE stability testing.. no matter how "trivial".. and I sure wouldnt trust any company that did.

and bugs are, well bugs. nv and ati have had and will continue to have them.

(Rollo enters, sees reply)

"Ha, I told you ATi's drivers were substandard!"

Kudos to me, I predicted the future... I knew it was coming!

That was like predicting the sun will rise in the East. Try predicting something harder, like when Rollo will say something nice about ATI.

When I put the game CD in it asks for the install CD because it doesn't see that the game is installed, but it works just fine from the start menu (after changing the link as well of course).

I am going to have to support Rollo here, and this would be my feelings no matter the situation. Renaming a file should hurt performance, obviously. So lets say their is a problem with the optimizations. Why don't they just release a beta driver that doesn't have a profile for Fear. Since catalyst and renaming the exe disables optimizations and nobody is having problems with optimization free gaming then removing the profile should have no impact on performance or reliability.

It really makes me wonder if its possible that their is something that we may not notice that isn't being rendered correctly and that the optimization is actually a work around for correct rendering. Like the SM3.0 done right joke. I forgot what feature they said that people can work around, texture fetching or something like that. I wonder if we are missing something small that isn't getting rendered or "processed" correctly and the optimization for fear include a work around that is slower but renders it correctly.

If this is the case I wonder if ATI will ever release a fix for this, or if they do, I wonder if it will be a true fix or just enough other optimizations to make up for the loss in performance caused by a workaround.
