i7-3770 with hyper-threading @ stock settings running Mac OSX Mountain Lion. This is the top of the line iMac you can buy.

It took 20 minutes to render. The A10 and 3570k beat it.

So why did it take so long? A 3770 with hyper-threading should demolish the 3570k, nevermind the A10. Maybe the OS is to blame?

Please investigate, turn HT off, whatever .. get some more results on the 3770 ..

Possibly.

Could also be the codec is poorly ported for the OS, or one of the support frameworks is a bad port (or different, or being emulated), or there's other stuff running on the iMac that's restricting core availability. Cross platform (OS X / Windows / Linux) benchmarks often end up being a testament to how much effort the developer put into getting their product working on a given platform, and not so much a comparison of the platforms themselves.

By those Dock icons, it looks like you've got iTunes and some chat apps open, and the progress bar under the Mission Control icon looks like you're starting to download something.

Boot the iMac into Windows and run the test again.

I haven't updated this topic in a while since I was busy.

Here are 2 new additions.

Intel Core Duo @ 2ghz. This was the top of the line cpu in the first Intel iMac.

It took 52 minutes to render which is pretty sad. Don't forget though that the Core Duo is 32 bit.



Next up is the Intel Core 2 Duo. Also @ 2ghz, this was the later iMac model and first to use the 64 bit chip.

Huge improvement to 27 minutes down from 52!



Now I still cannot find out the problem with the i7 iMac quad core. I changed the render settings once to 4 cores and then 6 for hyperthreading. Rendered it twice and it still took 20+ minutes. I plan to try a different program because maybe that version of Avidemux is broken. It's Mountain Lion only.

Ok, I encoded the video on the i7 with Handbrake. It finished in about 4 minutes which smokes every other CPU tested here.

So perhaps like I thought, the Mountain Lion version of Avidemux is poorly coded. I am confident the other Avidemux Mac tests are accurate though. Compare say the Core Duo to the AMD 4000+.

That said, I will run one of these other Mac tests with Handbrake.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 @ 2.3ghz - 17 minutes 26 seconds.

This will be the last test using the 17gb raw file. The reason is it doesn't fit on my USB drive and copying it from my external hard drive takes forever.

Next tests I do I will record a smaller raw file.
