When a tire gets a flat repair (say repaired a small leak or a nail puncture got patched up), is it actually safe to use and drive the same way you always do? How much of chance do repaired tires go bad and has to be repatched??

If it's a high perf tire with a speed rating (i.e. V or Z) then that rating no longer applies if the tire is patched.

It is on a high perf tire with a speed rating of V... so what does that mean, drive less harsh and not over 100mph?

^ when turning

IF they did a good job repairing, it should be .1% lower quality than it was before... i think....
but yea, don't go driving into trouble, but ingeneral you should be pretty good....

Tirerack.com says:
It is important to note that speed ratings only apply to tires that have not been damaged, altered, under-inflated or overloaded. Additionally, most tire manufacturers maintain that a tire that has been cut or punctured no longer retains the tire manufacturer's original speed rating, even after being repaired because the tire manufacturer can't control the quality of the repair.

Yea, your V rating is now all but meaningless on that tire, so in effect the entire car I wouldn't trust a patched tire at sustained speeds over 100, or even above 90 for that matter. Dangerous in my opinion (heat build up). But 1/4 mile or the occasional burst of speed exceeding a bit over 100 then it's ok.

are we talking going the speed limit? if so your fine, the tire will wear out before the patch.

I completely disagree. You injure the integrity of the tire regardless -- especially if it is a tire rated for higher speeds.

Theoretically, no, you will have changed the integrity of the tire.

Realisitcally, it is just fine.

I have patched/plugged MANY holes in MANY tires and I have never had a tire failure. (actually it's probably about 15 plugs and 2 patches) And before someone says something stupid about performance tires, these were mostly on Z rated tires and the plugs survived plenty of hundred mile per hour road trips, burn outs, and other stupid driving tricks.

What Michelin says:

Your Tire Is Damaged
There is a good chance that your tire can be repaired if:
1. The tire has not been driven on when flat
2. The damage is only on the tread section of your tire
3. The puncture is less than 1/4 inch

Have an authorized tire dealer or mechanic remove the tire from the wheel and inspect the tire from the inside. This inspection is absolutely necessary because internal damage is not visible while the tire is mounted.

The proper way to have a tire repaired is to patch the tire from the inside. If you are offered a plug repair--refuse! Plug repairs do not involve taking the tire off the wheel for a proper inspection. A plug is simply inserted into the punctured area. Plug repairs are not reliable and can cause the tire to blowout. Insist on a full inspection and patch repair on the inside of the tire.

From Michelin's Website............... so, yes, the tire can be patched but really recommend against plugging it for a repair.

As I understand it, if they used the type where the tire has been taken off the rim, it's fine.

The older type, where they put a hook through the tire and stick a plug into it, isn't nearly as good.

The inside type have a patch under the plug, which makes them better.

Or they are just trying to sell you a new tire once the person notice repair would cost nearly as much as a new tire.

I always buy used unmatched tires with several repairs in each for my wife.
Air bags are also disabled.

Wrong.

Sidewalls should _never_ be repaired, if the hole is in the sidewall, the tire needs to be scrapped.

If the hole is in the tread and the tire is repaired, the tire loses its speed rating and becomes a normal tire, rated to I think 89mph. I.e. if you have Z-rated tires and patch one, the patched tire is no longer Z-rater, it is rated the same as the $25 special Geo Metro tires that tire companies advertise for sale.

That said, no-one really drives hard enough to cause problems. I drove 10,000 miles on a plugged tire (picked up a nail when it was still pretty new) and never had a problem, I mean when do you go more than 89 miles per hour on the road?

So, to sum up: A patched tire is not as good as an un-patched tire, but it is still more than sufficient for daily driving needs. You can drive on a properly repaired tire indefinitely.
