I've racked my head for over a month on trying to recover a Windows 10 Install from a corrupted HDD. I imaged the mechanical HDD to a new mSata drive and I worked on it for some time until I managed to make the install no longer boot (inaccessible boot device). To make things easier, I have a dual boot install of Win 10 on that same SSD. One OS boots normally with 1803 and one continues to not work. I have the original mechanical drive which after dealing with the bad sectors, the drive can be used/access normally. On the mechanical drive (OG) I can boot to safe mode. So instead of re-imaging 350gb of data onto the msata to try again the repair of the OS, I tried to delete the Windows directory on the msata drive and re-copy it from the mechanical drive. Problem is, even though safemode windows loads on the mechanical drive (mechanical drive installed normally vs. external USB), I can't get the Msata Windows install to load.
What software do I have to use besides a low level drive imaging program to copy or move windows files while using windows? Windows 10 treats ANY windows directory like its that of its own and it's very hard to copy a windows directory from one drive to another. It would appear that the Windows directory was not copied properly because I can't think of another reason why the computer won't boot to the copied directory. I've tried bootrec, startup recovery and still get the inaccessible boot device error.
I'm sure if I did a full reimage of the mechanical drive, Windows 10 would boot into safe mode. But copying the all the data takes a really long time and it completely ignores the fact that I'm trying to repair this Windows install and I'm trying to copy files over from other Windows Installations and it feels like I'm creating more problems than I'm solving.
Windows 7+ is so difficult to repair when there is file corruption. I'm only trying this various file copying because Dism and SFC keep failing due to missing packages and files from the sources not working.
