Replace Dell power supply

How can I tell if the Dell I have here uses a standard ATX or proprietary power supply?

My understanding is that many Dells use a non-standard pinout.

I have one with a suspected dead power supply. It powers up, but there's no display - completely black screen.

With a replacement ATX power supply, it starts to boot Windows but then the screen goes blank at random times during bootup.

The dead giveaway is that the Dell P/S may have a non standard connector to the motherboard. Something other than the standard 20/24 pin m/b connector and the other 4 pin connector for processor power.

Model? How old? How hot are ambient temps?
Does it have a GX270 motherboard?

I have a couple 200W Dell PSUs if you want them.

That doesn't sound like a power supply issue.
If you tried a replacement, and all the pins actually connected, and you're still having booting issues, it sounds like some other hardware issue.
I had a Dell Dimension 3000, and replaced the proprietary power supply with an ATX 450W power supply, everything worked fine. It all fit and worked.

It's a standard ATX connector, and the pinout looks the same comparing the 2 connectors at first glance.

It's a Celeron, about 1.5 years old - YES - it is an Optiplex GX270.

Is this a common issue??

How depressing.

I noticed a couple caps bulging, but none leaking. I was suspecting a motherboard, but thought it odd that a new power supply changed the symptoms.

Rather than making a new thread I though I would jump in and ask a question.... I have a Dell Dimension 9100 from late 2005 with a Pentium D 820 CPU...right now I have three hard drives in it as well as a dvd burner. I want to make it a media center pc and add in another hard drive and another dvd drive and maybe a better video card...I am guessing the power supply that came with it is not going to handle the load so I am thinking about replacing the power supply with something stronger but I am not sure if you can do that... Has anyone done it with a 9100? Thanks

I'm trying to replace ps on Optiplex GX 240 and I can't just swap with any regular ps. I have several I have tried and they test fine until I plug the main power in the mobo. Then the accessory plugs for hdd and cd don't work. When I unplug the main molex from board then they work fine. A couple shops told me you need compatible supplies. If anyone can confirm this please do so.
