replace HDD in T40

I'm thinking about swapping out the 30GB HDD that came with my T40 for a Toshiba MK6022GAX(HDD2184) 60GB 16MB 5400RPM. I've got a few questions for the folk around here first. Do I need any sort of special HDD caddy or anything like that to do this, or can I salvage whatever I need off of the old 30GB that came with it? Is there any way to get the pre-desktop partition loaded onto this new drive (ie somehow mirror the old drive onto the new one, will the recovery cds set one up, etc)?

You would just need to replace the new drive with the old one, and there is no new hardware involved. As for mirroring your drives, you would need to install both drives in a desktop with special adapters and use Symantec Ghost or a similar program.

so the recovery disks won't put the recovery partition on a new drive?

To replace the HDD that came with your T40, just simply take out the old one and put the new one it. You will need to take off/put in total of 5 screws in the process and use the old drive caddy that came with your T40. And AFAIK, the recovery partition can be copied or ghost to a new HDD by selecting the disable (or normal should also work) under the PREdesktop area in the BIOS. This will allow the OS or program to see the hidden partition. Then you can simply backup the partition. If you want to use the old 30GB drive in a desktop, you will need a 2.5" IDE coverter (which is very easy to buy at a local microcenter or on the web) and probably a drive caddy depending on your desktop case configuration.
