I provided the EXACT same information that a Microsoft rep gave me over the telephone. I consider such a liberal replacement policy to be a Hot Deal, and a great service from Microsoft. Had I known the details of Microsoft's warranty return policy earlier, I wouldn't have had to live with two flakey mice for so damn long. After getting so many great tips from this forum, I felt a responsiblity to make my own contribution.

Like many things in life, it's up to the individual to use this public information in a responsible and lawful manner.

In conclusion, piss off asshole.

Wino,

Anyone who truly has a broken MS mouse will find out about this through the proper channels, just like you did. I agree with the other person, I don't think it's appropriate to post this in a Hot Deals forum.

I disagree.

I was living with 1 flakey mouse and 1 useless mouse until a friend of mine on IRC mentioned some of the details about Microsoft's mouse return policy. That mention prompeted me to finally call Microsoft and take care of my problem.

So by your statement, you believe the following people don't truly have broken mice and are abusing the system because they did not find out about this "through the proper channels." It seems to me this post has helped out people with completely legitimate claims to a replacement from Microsoft Supplemental Parts:

"Thanks, my optical mouse has been acting up for awhile now. I finally had to replace it with a non optical one. I'll be glad to get a replacement."

While I agree with you that someone could use the information here to abuse Microsoft's return policy, I COMPLETELY disagree that the information should be censored from AnandTech forum readers who can legitimately benefit from this post. Why people like yourself keep suggesting it be censored boggles the mind.

I'm not sure where to post this so I'll keep it here and see if anyone has any links etc. for me. I have an OEM MS mouse and to get warranty help I need to find the authorized dealer who supplied it to Altima Solutions, now out of business. Does anyone have any info on Altima Solutions or info on how to get info on finding out of business companies? Thanks.

Hey, moron you do realize that each product ID number is different and they won't let you do it more than once per product ID number. Just go pay the damn 10 cents ya cheapass, Jesus.

I've got the original MS Explorer on my other system, and sometimes it works fine, but other times it goes real slow and requires a reboot. I've been meaning to replace it...I think I'll take advantage of this. Thanks!

I sent them a fax on Thursday and they did not respond to my e-mail address. I think they probably tossed my fax in the garbage, because the Intellemouse was OEM and the other mouse was an old plain basic mouse. Oh well, I'm out the cost of a long distance fax...

How very odd, every mouse on my entire dorm floor made by MS broke at the exact same time, right after I was done reading this post...damn, I should send all 100 or so of them in right away, and make sure MS gets them to me asap!

P.S. This thread should be closed and locked and deleted and moved and killed and slaughtered and ......
Anyone who has a dead mouse who looks at the hot deals forum is frugal enough to find out the warranty on it, it does NOT NEED TO BE POSTED HERE

It took them about 2 days to send me a confirmation email. Then 2 more days before it shipped 2nd day Airborne Express.

Good luck 2 you 2!

For all you morally self righteous Bertha-Better-than-you's who have posted in this thread, my mouse is BROKEN beyond a shadow of a doubt.

When someone peruses this service is is a matter between them and MS and is nobody else's business. Some people really need to get a life.

I heard Microsoft is extremely cash-poor. They might have to take out a loan to pay for these replacement mice.

think about the cost of advertising!!??

is it cheaper to hand out free mice that are sitting on everyones desk, or spend millions on media adverstising?

if i could get my name on each and everyones desk, what would be the best way? dont you think that someone up in Seattle realizes the loophole is this program?

cost to produce a mouse = pennies
cost to advertise millions

you do the math !!

that being said, i for one would not take advantage of this program. its just another case of trying to get something for nothing and in the end costing the rest of us. if you have a broken ms mouse, take MS up on the deal, if not, then SIT!!!

my .02 imho

Do you realize I am not Jesus? I might not make as much money as you do and my parents were poor so I cant go to them for money like you do. I gotta save a lil back out of my next few paychecks to afford it so be quiet if you don't wanna help and would rather just judge me!

There will be to many false claims from people with 0 integrity and I am sure MS will stop this policy.

Here's why no one will scan the bottom of their mouse for you, spelled out, in black and grey:
1) Why should anyone do the work for you? If you need a replacement mouse it ought to be worth it for you to spend a dime on a xerox of the defective mouse. That's certainly cheaper than a new mouse. It's not the responsibility of anyone here to ensure you get your mouse.

2) Product IDs are unique. If someone scans their mouse for you, they'll be unable to exchange it if/when it really breaks. That's a sacrifice I'm sure not many are willing to make for you.

3) Thirdly, you some across as being in this only for a free mouse. I can think of no one, no matter what their financial situation, that would ever have qualms with spending a dime ($0.10, mind you) for anything, let alone when there is so much to be gained. My theory is that you don't have a Microsoft mouse at home, hence why you can't invest the dime to make a copy. You want someone to send you the bottom of their mouse -- essentially giving their warranty to you -- so that you might receive a brand new shiny Microsoft mouse. Am I right?

Sorry lala, but for asking a favor and all, your attitude has been less than exemplary. We the forum members do not exist solely to serve you. Sometimes the entire point of a hot deal is that it takes a bit of effort for the eventual gain.

Wow, many people calling out fraud.
I wonder what you would consider my situation.

I bought a known-to-be-semi-defective, never-been-RMA'd MS intellimouse explorer 1.0 from a friend for a couple of bucks because I knew I could RMA it.
It worked fine for a month now, but is suffering from the dim LED, auto shut off/turn on symptoms that my other mice shared.
I constantly unplug and plug it back into USB as a temporary fix.
I plan to replace it under this warranty service. Is that fraud?

The way I see it, MS knows that they can cover all the defective explorer 1.0's (which are known to be prone to breakage), which is why they're being very lenient on this.

But I agree... I don't condone fraud and am VERY against it.
Please don't abuse this excellent service provided by MS.

BTW, I've RMA'd 2 other dead MS mice half a year ago (1 optical 5 button, 1 intellimouse explorer) and they came promptly as soon as they were back in stock

Thanks for the info. I have an old MS two-button mouse that's dying. I don't remember when or where I got it from. It might have come with my old Dell system, or it might be one of the dozen mice I've bought since then. But at least now I can find out if MS will replace it.

I did this for my original Microsoft Intellimouse Optical about 2 months back, this thread does NOT need to be locked. It's pretty much like a recall for bad product. My mouse would intermittently cut off and on, the optical light would completely turn off, then after about 2 seconds it would come back up and WinXP would redetect it ... this is a really bad thing to have happen in the middle of a fire fight in MOHAA

I figured the mouse was just bad and threw it in my closet until I saw the original thread. I'd recommend calling them first because they will be able to verify the Product ID on the fly and then you won't waste your time faxing and waiting for them to get back to you.

The replacement mouse is working good, thanks Microsoft although it just got replaced by a new Logitech wireless keyboard / mouse for free ... thanks Logitech

didn't realize that jesus had any money ! :Q
got a digital camera? take a picture and print it out.
got a local library? most have a copy machine.

if you cant afford a dime, then maybe you just need to wait untill you can. why would you ask someone else to spend money on you? whether or not you have a ligitimate ms mouse, only you will know. but cant expect someone else to take care of you if you cant take care of your self.

judgement has been served.
