Hello, I just got my replacement fan from Asus for the a8n sli. The stock chipset fan failed on my a couple days ago. It won't even spin anymore, even if I give it a little push.

Just wanted to know proper way to install so I have no further problems. Looks like Im going to have to remove the MB. I also found a syringe of polysynthetic compound from arcticsilver, if I might have to use it. Any help would be cool. THanks.

You will defiantely need to use the compound. If you dont know how to apply it, use a small amount spread very thin covering the entire surface of the chip (but not slopping over the edge), a little goes a long way.

Other than that I dont know anything about your board, but I think I remember a thread about that fan failing (pretty common), so search and see what you find, I dont remember if the thread had actually instructions on how to replace it though.

Keep in mind more Artic Silver is not better. It has been said many times before, but it always needs reiterating.

When I replaced my chipset fan with the zalman passive heatsink, I had to completely remove all of my components from the motherboard, unscrew the mobo from the tray, and I had a HELL of a time removing the pins that held the fan in. There were a few moments where I almost gave up. But I pressed on, knowing I had gone too far to turn back, and dammit, if I wanted a silent chipset cooler, there had to be sacrifices; some fingertips would be lost, some nerves wracked... oh, ahem. Yeah, good luck.

Sweet, sounds like fun. Should I clean the chipset before adding the new fan. What is good to clean it with. I havent started yet but saw a picture somewhere of a thin black covering over the chip. Can I take this off as well? Thanks

OK, I have the fan off. Now there is this black plastic over the chip. Do I take this off? What do I use to clean it?

I have a tube of arcticsilver polysynthetic compoound, and zalman thermal grease. Which one do I use?

And my guess, is that the black piece is there for a reason. I didnt receive another black covering with the new fan. Once the black piece is removed in pics it looks likle that chip has little silver metals nubs sticknig up. If I were to put the fan on top of these, it deosnt seem like there would be much contact with the chip, so wouldnt be effective in taking heat away. Just my thoughts. And do I use thermal grease, or polysynthetic compound?

I need some input. Thanks
